About The Position

The Store Manager Candidate supports the Store Manager in implementing store processes, including employee supervision, staffing, inventory management, stocking and receiving, paperwork, and other store needs. The position provides interactive development for an external candidate preparing for a Store Manager role and is intended to be held for a limited period. The candidate assists with recruiting and staffing, merchandising, inventory management, ordering, customer service, store operations, cash controls, and maintaining a safe, clean, well-stocked store. The candidate may operate the store in the Store Manager’s absence and reviews operating statements to identify business trends, expense-control opportunities, potential shrink, and errors. The role requires completing paperwork and documentation within established guidelines and deadlines. The position involves frequent walking, standing, bending, stooping, kneeling, and handling merchandise and equipment. It also requires frequent lifting of up to 40 pounds, occasional lifting of up to 55 pounds and climbing a ladder, and occasional driving or providing personal transportation for bank deposits, meetings, and visits to other stores. Some travel with limited overnight stays is required. The work is in a fast-paced environment with moderate noise and occasional exposure to outside weather conditions.

Requirements

Ability to read and interpret diagrams, safety rules, operating and maintenance instructions, and procedure manuals.
Ability to perform mathematical calculations, including addition, subtraction, multiplication, division, and percentages.
Knowledge of cash-handling procedures, cashier accountability, and deposit controls.
Ability to learn and perform IBM cash register functions, including report generation.
Knowledge of inventory management and merchandising practices.
Knowledge of cash, facility, and safety-control policies and practices, including deposits, store keys, SAFE, and STARS programs.
Knowledge of recruiting, interviewing, hiring, counseling, and termination practices, including legal compliance and internal processes.
Effective oral and written communication skills.
Effective interpersonal skills and the ability to interact tactfully and directly with employees.
Effective organizational skills and attention to detail.
Ability to solve problems and handle situations with limited standardization.
High school diploma or equivalent strongly preferred.
Occasional driving or providing personal transportation for job-related activities.
Ability to meet the stated physical requirements, including frequent lifting of up to 40 pounds and occasional lifting of up to 55 pounds.

Nice To Haves

One year of experience in a retail environment is preferred for external candidates.
Bilingual Spanish speakers may be preferred at certain store locations.

Responsibilities

Assist with recruiting and staffing activities, including recruiting, hiring, and training qualified applicants.
Assist with merchandising, including staging, stocking, storing, signing, and pricing merchandise according to established practices and the Store Manager’s direction.
Assist with inventory management, including processing damages and markdowns, register scanning, paperwork, facility controls, and conducting inventories.
Follow prescribed ordering practices to meet or exceed in-stock targets.
Provide leadership in delivering superior customer service and respond sensitively to customer needs.
Follow company procedures and policies and serve as a role model for employees.
Participate in store opening and closing activities.
Ensure company funds are deposited safely at the designated bank.
Assist in maintaining the store’s financial integrity through cashier accountability, key control, security practices, and cash-control procedures.
Help maintain clean, well-stocked stores and a safe environment for customers and employees.
Operate the store in the Store Manager’s absence.
Review operating statements for business trends, including sales, labor, profitability, and inventory turn, and identify expense-control opportunities, potential shrink, and errors.
Complete paperwork and documentation according to guidelines and deadlines.
Support staff development and cooperation, and act as a liaison between the Store Support Center and store employees.
Ensure store compliance with federal labor laws and company policies and procedures.
Occasionally drive or provide personal transportation for bank deposits, management meetings, and visits to other Dollar General stores.
