About The Position

The Store Manager Candidate supports the Store Manager in implementing store processes, including employee supervision, staffing, inventory management, stocking and receiving, paperwork, and other store needs. The position is intended to develop an external candidate for the Store Manager role and is held for a limited period. The role may operate the store in the Store Manager’s absence and supports recruiting, merchandising, inventory controls, customer service, store security, financial integrity, and the maintenance of a clean and safe store. The candidate reviews operating statements to identify business trends and control opportunities, and completes required paperwork and documentation according to guidelines and deadlines. The work takes place in a fast-paced environment with a moderate noise level. It involves frequent walking, standing, bending, stooping, kneeling, merchandise handling and lifting, occasional ladder climbing and driving, and occasional exposure to outside weather. Some travel is required, with limited overnight stays.

Requirements

Ability to read and interpret diagrams, safety rules, operating and maintenance instructions, and procedure manuals.
Ability to perform basic mathematical calculations, including percentages.
Knowledge of cash handling, cashier accountability, and deposit controls.
Ability to learn and perform IBM cash register functions, including generating reports.
Knowledge of inventory management and merchandising practices.
Knowledge of cash, facility, and safety control policies and practices, including deposits, store keys, SAFE, and STARS programs.
Knowledge of recruiting, interviewing, hiring, counseling, and termination practices, including legal compliance and internal processes.
Effective oral and written communication skills.
Effective interpersonal and organizational skills, with attention to detail.
Ability to solve problems and handle situations where limited standardization exists.
Ability to align motives, values, and beliefs with Dollar General values; support ownership by developing others; interact tactfully and directly with employees; and respond sensitively to customer needs.
High school diploma or equivalent strongly preferred.
Frequent walking, standing, bending, stooping, and kneeling; frequent handling of merchandise and equipment; frequent lifting up to 40 pounds and occasional lifting up to 55 pounds; occasional ladder climbing and driving.

Nice To Haves

One year of experience in a retail environment is preferred for external candidates.
Bilingual Spanish speakers may be preferred at certain store locations.

Responsibilities

Assist in recruiting and staffing activities.
Assist with merchandising, including staging, stocking, storage, presentation, and proper use of fixtures, signage, and pricing.
Assist with inventory management, including damages, markdowns, register scanning, paperwork, facility controls, and conducting inventories.
Follow ordering practices to meet or exceed in-stock targets.
Provide leadership in delivering superior customer service.
Model adherence to company procedures and policies.
Participate in store opening and closing activities.
Ensure company funds are deposited safely in the designated bank.
Support store financial integrity through cashier accountability, key control, security practices, and cash-control procedures.
Help maintain clean, well-stocked stores and a safe environment for customers and employees.
Operate the store in the Store Manager’s absence.
Review operating statements for business trends, expense-control opportunities, potential shrink, and errors.
Complete paperwork and documentation according to guidelines and deadlines.
Support staff development and recruit, hire, and train qualified applicants.
Ensure store compliance with federal labor laws and company policies and procedures.
Act as a liaison between the Store Support Center and store employees and foster cooperation and collaboration.
