About The Position

The Store Manager Candidate supports the Store Manager in implementing store processes, including employee supervision, staffing, inventory management, stocking and receiving, paperwork, and other store needs. This position is intended to provide interactive development for an external candidate for the Store Manager role and is held for a limited period. The role may operate the store in the Store Manager’s absence and supports customer service, merchandising, inventory, cash and facility controls, staffing, and store operations. The position requires some travel, with limited overnight stays.

Requirements

Ability to read and interpret diagrams, safety rules, operating and maintenance instructions, and procedure manuals.
Ability to perform basic mathematical calculations, including percentages.
Knowledge of cash-handling procedures, cashier accountability, and deposit controls.
Ability to learn and perform IBM cash register functions, including report generation.
Knowledge of inventory management and merchandising practices.
Knowledge of cash, facility, and safety control policies and practices, including deposits, store keys, SAFE, and STARS programs.
Knowledge of recruiting, interviewing, hiring, counseling, and termination practices, including legal compliance and internal processes.
Effective oral and written communication skills.
Effective interpersonal skills.
Strong organizational skills and attention to detail.
Ability to solve problems and handle situations where limited standardization exists.
Frequent walking and standing; frequent bending, stooping, and kneeling.
Frequent handling of merchandise and equipment, including hand-held scanners, pricing guns, box cutters, merchandise containers, carts, two-wheel dollies, and U-boats.
Frequent lifting of up to 40 pounds and occasional lifting of up to 55 pounds.
Occasional climbing using a ladder.
Occasional driving or providing own transportation for work-related duties.
Ability to work in a fast-paced environment with a moderate noise level and occasional exposure to outside weather conditions.
Ability to travel, with limited overnight stays.

Nice To Haves

High school diploma or equivalent is strongly preferred.
One year of experience in a retail environment is preferred for external candidates.
Bilingual Spanish speakers may be preferred at certain store locations.

Responsibilities

Assist with recruiting and staffing activities, including recruiting, hiring, and training qualified applicants.
Assist with merchandising, including staging, stocking, storing, signing, and pricing merchandise according to established practices and Store Manager direction.
Assist with inventory management, including damages, markdowns, register scanning, paperwork, facility controls, and conducting inventories.
Follow ordering practices to meet or exceed in-stock targets.
Provide customer service leadership and demonstrate responsiveness to customer needs.
Follow company procedures and policies and act as a role model for employees.
Participate in store opening and closing activities.
Ensure company funds are deposited safely at the designated bank.
Support the financial integrity of the store through cashier accountability, key control, security practices, and cash control procedures.
Help maintain clean, well-stocked stores and a safe environment for customers and employees.
Operate the store in the Store Manager’s absence.
Review operating statements to identify business trends, expense-control opportunities, potential shrink, and errors.
Complete paperwork and documentation according to guidelines and deadlines.
Support staff development and foster cooperation and collaboration.
Act as a liaison between the Store Support Center and store employees.
Ensure store compliance with federal labor laws and company policies and procedures.
Occasionally drive or provide own transportation for bank deposits, management meetings, and visits to other Dollar General stores.
