About The Position

This position assists customers with donations, selecting and purchasing items at The Salvation Army store, operates and maintains the cash register, responds to customer questions, and helps keep store displays and the warehouse clean and orderly. The role also helps protect store merchandise and cash-register security; loads, unloads, inspects, and sorts donations; moves materials within the warehouse; and assists with warehouse setup, cleanup, and breakdown. The position may include riding in a Salvation Army truck on scheduled donation-pickup routes, helping navigate to destinations, and performing routine truck maintenance.

Requirements

High school diploma or GED.
Two years of experience sorting, receiving, storing, loading, and unloading materials in a warehouse or store setting, or an equivalent combination of training and experience providing the required knowledge, skills, and abilities.
Ability to frequently lift, carry, push, or pull materials, supplies, and equipment weighing over 50 pounds.
Ability to perform frequent standing, walking, climbing, bending, reaching, and transporting merchandise.

Nice To Haves

Experience working in a retail store is preferred.

Responsibilities

Assist customers purchasing items from The Salvation Army store; collect payments, count change, prepare receipts, package purchases, balance the cash drawer, and run routine register printouts.
May prepare and deliver bank deposits.
Answer the store telephone courteously, respond to customer questions, provide directions or general information, and may schedule and record donation pickups.
Load and fluff clothing in the bailer machine and unload trucks delivering donated items to the warehouse.
Monitor warehouse entrances and the dock area to deter theft.
Briefly inspect donations to determine whether they can be used under established policies and procedures.
Prepare accurate and complete donation receipts and maintain good relationships with donors to promote a favorable image of The Salvation Army.
Distribute donations to appropriate warehouse locations and load items onto a truck for disposal.
Lift, carry, or haul donations into trucks and pack items to use space effectively, protect items from damage, and ensure safety.
Ride in a Salvation Army truck on scheduled routes to pick up donated items and assist the driver with navigation using maps or handwritten directions.
Perform routine truck maintenance, check fluid levels regularly, and provide repair work as needed.
Maintain the cleanliness and orderliness of store displays and the warehouse area and help with warehouse setup, cleanup, and breakdown.
