About The Position

Voya's Employee Benefits division is seeking Stop Loss Group Underwriters to evaluate employer group medical stop loss submissions and support underwriting decisions for new business and renewal opportunities. The underwriter will assess risk, claims experience, large claimant activity, group demographics, participation, plan design, contract terms, funding arrangements, pricing, and profitability while ensuring coverage meets underwriting guidelines.

  • Associate Group Underwriter: 0–2 years of underwriting experience typically required. Entry-level position working under direct supervision. Handles basic group insurance applications. Approval authority up to 1,000 lives.
  • Senior Group Underwriter: 3–4 years of group underwriting or voluntary benefits experience typically required. Independently handles more difficult and complex group insurance applications. Approval authority up to 5,000 lives. May provide training and guidance to junior underwriters.
  • Lead Group Underwriter: 5–8 years of underwriting experience typically required. Independently handles the most complex underwriting cases. Approval authority up to 10,000 lives. Provides guidance, work direction, training, and quality/performance input.

  • Supplemental health experience preferred for Lead Group Underwriter.

Responsibilities

  • Review new business and renewal opportunities.
  • Analyze group demographics, enrollment, participation, and plan design.
  • Review claims experience and identify large claimant activity.
  • Evaluate contract terms, funding arrangements, pricing, and profitability.
  • Apply underwriting guidelines and determine appropriate coverage terms.
  • Gather and validate information required for underwriting decisions.
  • Partner with brokers, clients, field representatives, and internal teams.
  • Communicate underwriting decisions, recommendations, and requirements.
  • Ensure proposed coverage is financially sound and administratively feasible.
  • Support the competitiveness and profitability of the stop loss book of business.
