About The Position
The Sterile Processing Technician prepares instrumentation for surgical procedures. The role includes cleaning and decontamination, assembling instrument sets, and sterilization. The technician ensures required processing-equipment testing is completed and maintains required documentation and logs, following applicable standards and guidelines from the NYSDOH, AORN, AAAHC, OSHA, CDC, AAMI, and instrument manufacturers.
Requirements
- High school diploma or equivalent.
- Current CRCST certification from IAHCSMM or CBSPD.
- Ability to lift and move trays of instruments and patient-care equipment, including IV pumps and monitors, weighing up to 25 pounds.
- Ability to bend, lift, and wash using decontamination processes involving instrument pans, bins, trays, and carts of various sizes.

- 1–3 years of prior sterile processing experience.
Responsibilities
- Open the processing department according to policy and procedure.
- Perform startup procedures and testing of instrument washers and autoclaves, and document outcomes.
- Receive dirty instruments and sets in the decontamination area, disassemble sets, and prepare them for processing in an instrument washer.
- Clean and decontaminate instruments that cannot be cleaned through an automated process.
- Assemble instrument sets according to inventory sheets, prepare them for autoclaving, and load and initiate the appropriate cycle.
- Perform biological testing on loads containing implants and maintain appropriate logs and documentation.
- Operate required equipment and machinery accurately and safely.
- Notify the Charge Nurse and Clinical Nurse Manager of processing-equipment malfunctions or issues.
- Review and document biological testing results and notify the Charge Nurse and Clinical Nurse Manager of positive results.
- Maintain appropriate records and monitor quality-control and infection-control standards.
- Collaborate with the OR Charge Nurse to ensure necessary instrumentation is available throughout the day and for the following day.
- Perform other responsibilities as needed or assigned.
