The Sterile Processing Technician is responsible for the cleaning, decontamination, inspection, assembly, packaging, sterilization, storage, and distribution of reusable surgical instruments and medical equipment. This role ensures the proper functionality and sterility of these items to prevent infection within a healthcare facility, adhering to strict guidelines and protocols established by regulatory agencies. The technician will collect used and contaminated equipment, instruments, and supplies for sorting and decontamination, manually clean supplies, and operate and maintain decontamination equipment. They will prepare and pack decontaminated supplies for sterilization, monitor and operate sterilization equipment, and act as a preceptor for new employees. Meticulous examination of supplies to ensure proper cleaning and sanitization, testing and reporting issues with sterilization equipment, and organizing equipment into instrument trays are key duties. The role also involves preparing and delivering necessary equipment and instruments for surgeries, examinations, and medical procedures, maintaining records of sterilization procedures and equipment maintenance, and controlling inventory, reordering supplies, and checking expiration dates. Work is typically performed in a clinical environment, and the employee is accountable for satisfying all job-specific obligations and complying with organizational policies and procedures.
