About The Position

The Sterile Processing Technician II is responsible for assembling general and specialty instruments and sets, decontaminating instruments, and performing all SPD Tech I accountabilities. This role also involves demonstrating leadership behaviors and implementing quality improvement ideas to enhance operations and team function. The position requires a high school diploma and at least one year of SPD experience. Preferred qualifications include SPD Certification and being a Registered Central Service Tech. The role involves exposure to ETO, blood/body fluids, heavy lifting, and requires the Hepatitis vaccine at hire. The technician must be able to respond quickly to emergent situations, have the strength and dexterity to handle surgical instruments/equipment, and be able to access all areas of the department.

Requirements

  • Computer skills.
  • Experienced in operating sterilization equipment.
  • Registered Central Service Tech.

Responsibilities

  • Assembles general and specialty instruments and sets.
  • Examines surgical instrumentation for cleanliness, proper assembly, and proper performance.
  • Assembles instrument sets, ensuring correct number and type of instruments are present following established lists and placing them appropriately for sterilization and ease of use.
  • Checks instrument performance and identifies repair needs.
  • Acts as a resource on instrument identification, appropriate use, location, and availability.
  • Decontaminates general and specialty instruments and sets.
  • Maintains a neat and clean work area at all times.
  • Reports improper equipment operation to the person in charge.
  • Handles infectious waste according to established hospital procedure.
  • Demonstrates independent function in ensuring soiled instrumentation is decontaminated to prevent cross-contamination.
  • Follows PPE protocol when in decontamination.
  • Sets up decontamination equipment for operation and ensures proper function and continuous work flow throughout the shift.
  • Performs all SPD Tech I accountabilities when assigned.
  • Assembles case carts for all areas SPD services.
  • Follows sterilization protocol according to SPD Tech I job description.
  • Demonstrates leadership behaviors.
  • When in charge, assists with adjustments in daily work assignments to compensate for fluctuations in work flow.
  • Observes employee activities throughout the shift to ensure established procedures are being followed for quality control.
  • Notifies manager of any problems that occur during the shift.
  • Assists in ensuring equipment is properly functioning by communicating malfunctions to manager and/or Engineering/Biomed and completing appropriate work orders.
  • Acts as a liaison between SPD and other departments to interpret problems and communicate back professionally.
  • Monitors the activities of employees in SPD on weekends and holidays, being accountable for an effective and efficient operation.
  • Implements quality improvement ideas to enhance operation and team function.
  • Identifies and discusses problem/improvement opportunities with the manager.
  • Presents problem/improvement opportunities with an action plan.
  • Assists in precepting and/or training of new technicians.
