About The Position

The Sterile Processing Technician II is a competent and experienced member of the sterile processing team. This position is responsible for the safe and efficient decontamination, cleaning, inspection, assembly, sterilization, and distribution of surgical instruments, equipment, and medical supplies in accordance with established policies, procedures, and industry standards. The position demonstrates strong knowledge of surgical instrumentation and sterilization methods, supports training of new staff, and assists with workflow and quality improvements to ensure safe, high-quality products for patient care.

Requirements

  • High school diploma or equivalent (GED) required.
  • Current certification in Sterile Processing Technology (CRCST or equivalent) required.
  • One year of MWHC sterile processing experience OR two years of external SPD I‑level experience.
  • Demonstrated competence in sterile processing practices, including instrument identification and advanced set assembly.
  • Demonstrated ability to stay organized and prioritize tasks effectively in a fast‑paced environment.
  • Basic computer skills required.
  • Ability to operate automated and technical equipment used in sterile processing.

Nice To Haves

  • Completion of a Sterile Processing Technician training program preferred.
  • Experience with instrument tracking systems preferred.

Responsibilities

  • Maintains departmental policies and procedures while following all quality assurance, safety, environmental, and infection control standards.
  • Decontaminates, cleans, inspects, and assembles surgical instruments and medical devices according to established policies and procedures.
  • Packages and wraps instruments and supplies using proper techniques to maintain sterility.
  • Operates, monitors, and performs basic troubleshooting on sterilization equipment, including steam sterilizers, low‑temperature systems, ETO sterilizers, and washer‑disinfectors.
  • Performs biological, chemical, and mechanical testing of sterilization cycles and documents results according to quality assurance standards.
  • Assembles complex surgical trays, specialty sets, code carts, and case carts accurately and efficiently.
  • Identifies, handles, and assembles specialized and delicate instrumentation used in advanced surgical procedures.
  • Stores and rotates supplies, equipment, and instrument trays in accordance with departmental procedures and industry standards.
  • Maintains accurate records for sterilization loads, instrument tracking, and inventory documentation.
  • Receives requests for patient care equipment and delivers items to units in a timely and customer‑focused manner.
  • Follows all infection prevention practices, standard precautions, and safety guidelines related to chemicals and hazardous materials.
  • Uses advanced knowledge of instrumentation to support accurate assembly and prioritization of surgical sets.
  • Reports discrepancies to leadership.
  • Assists in resolving workflow issues, equipment concerns, or deviations related to instrument quality or sterility.
  • Provides training support to new technicians and serves as a knowledgeable resource on instrumentation, workflow processes, and sterilization methods.
  • Participates in education programs, in‑service training, and process improvement initiatives.
  • Performs other duties as assigned.
