About The Position

The Sterile Processing Tech is responsible for the decontamination, sterilization, and distribution of patient care equipment and instruments. This role ensures that all equipment is safe and ready for use by healthcare professionals. The position involves meticulous attention to detail in following established procedures for cleaning, sterilizing, and documenting processes. The tech will also manage inventory, assemble case carts, and communicate effectively with team members and other departments.

Requirements

  • High school diploma.
  • 1 year sterile processing or related experience.
  • Good communication skills.
  • Ability to communicate and follow directions.
  • Computer skills.
  • Must be CRCST certified (or equivalent) within 18 months of hire.

  • Healthcare experience highly preferred.

Responsibilities

  • Decontamination of Patient Care Equipment: Wears proper protective attire, follows established procedures for decontamination and handling, collects soiled equipment, maintains a clean work area, reports improper equipment operation, cleans and disinfects equipment and work area, and handles infectious waste according to hospital procedure.
  • Performance of Sterilization: Assembles test packs, monitors sterilizer function daily, interprets recorder data, labels processed items, positions items for sterilization, documents processed items, reviews and completes documentation for test packs, and reports malfunctions immediately.
  • Performance of Inventory/Storage/Distribution Functions: Places sterile items for distribution, stores sterile items maintaining first-in/first-out inventory, notifies appropriate people on back orders and shortages, completes case carts for OR, answers telephone courteously, completes SPD paperwork, assists with cleaning storage areas, receives and inspects supplies, and puts away supplies.
  • Communication Skill to Support the Accomplishment of Team Outcome: Cooperates with coworkers, identifies learning needs, comprehends written and verbal instructions, documents appropriately, works in all areas to accomplish daily workloads, gives and receives feedback, collaborates to prioritize workload, understands verbal instructions, and communicates properly with coworkers and customers.
  • Validation of Patient Care Equipment and Dept. Sterilizers: Ensures equipment components are present and assembled, tests equipment for correct function, runs appropriate tests for sterilizers (biological, bowie dick), and validates each sterilization cycle using indicators.
  • Performance of Assembly/Packaging/Wrapping: Assembles instrument sets, completes count sheets/supply sheets, and follows procedures to package and/or wrap trays/items for terminal sterilization.
  • Maintenance of Effective Functions in the Department: Demonstrates independent function, reaches consensus with the team for productive operations, and supports team decisions.
