Sterile Processing Technicians work in a fast-paced department and are responsible for cleaning, decontaminating, inspecting, assembling, packaging, sterilizing, storing, and distributing medical and surgical instrumentation. Instruments are checked throughout the processing cycle to ensure they are clean, in good repair, assembled, and processed correctly. Technicians also maintain records and track items across job functions, providing properly processed products when needed, with patient safety and quality at the center of their work. Technicians assemble case carts according to surgery schedules, including the sterile instrumentation required for each procedure. Completed carts are transported to the operating room and placed in the designated area. Depending on the Grand Rapids hire site, the department may support approximately 40–90 surgical cases. Team members wear surgical attire in the department. New hires complete a 90-day orientation that includes an SPD 101 class covering departmental standards and regulations, as well as preceptor support. Orientation is scheduled Monday through Friday, 7:00 a.m. to 3:30 p.m.; afterward, team members move to their regular shift.
