About The Position

The Sterile Processing (SPD) Technician is responsible for the decontamination, disinfection and sterilization of surgical instruments and equipment. This role requires knowledge of processes, procedures, quality assurance, chemicals, and medical instruments to effectively decontaminate, assemble, wrap, and sterilize equipment, supplies, and instruments. The technician must understand equipment function, adhere to sanitary, infection control, and safety standards, and independently follow cleaning checklists. Responsibilities also include maintaining a clean and safe environment, managing department inventory, communicating with operating room staff, applying aseptic technique and precautions, and staying knowledgeable of regulatory standards like AAMI and ANSI. The role involves collaboration with other disciplines, reporting occurrences, fostering developmental and educational processes (including precepting), participating in continuing education, and managing controllable costs through resourcefulness. The position is located at Proliance Puget Sound Surgery Center in Lakewood, WA, with a schedule of Monday - Friday, 8:00 am - 4:30 pm.

  • Sterile Processing Tech certification preferred
  • Instrument processing/Sterile processing experience preferred

Responsibilities

  • Decontaminate, disinfect, and sterilize surgical instruments and equipment.
  • Demonstrate knowledge of processes, procedures, quality assurance, chemicals, and medical instruments.
  • Demonstrate knowledge of equipment function to determine operational adequacy and distinguish between operator error and equipment malfunction.
  • Demonstrate knowledge of applicable sanitary, infection control, and safety standards.
  • Independently follow all cleaning checklists thoroughly and appropriately.
  • Initiate cleaning and restocking of all work areas and supplies as necessary.
  • Float between all areas of decontamination and sterile processing.
  • Maintain communication with operating room staff.
  • Apply principles of aseptic technique and standard and transmission precautions.
  • Assist in the procurement and maintenance of department inventory.
  • Maintain a clean and safe environment.
  • Maintain knowledge of all applicable regulatory standards, including AAMI and ANSI standards.
  • Collaborate with other disciplines to maximize patient outcomes and ensure a smooth flow of the surgical experience.
  • Report occurrences through the center’s established reporting process related to employee, equipment, and/or patient/visitor events.
  • Foster the developmental and educational process of self, colleagues, orientees, and students (includes functioning as a preceptor).
  • Participate in acceptable continuing education and skill development, including meeting departmental continuing education requirements.
  • Assist in managing controllable costs by the proper, non-wasteful use of resources.
  • Perform any and all other duties as assigned.
