The Sterile Processing (SPD) Technician is responsible for the decontamination, disinfection and sterilization of surgical instruments and equipment. This role requires knowledge of processes, procedures, quality assurance, chemicals, and medical instruments to effectively decontaminate, assemble, wrap, and sterilize equipment, supplies, and instruments. The technician must understand equipment function to determine operational adequacy and identify malfunctions. They must also adhere to applicable sanitary, infection control, and safety standards, follow cleaning checklists, and maintain a clean and safe environment. This position involves floating between decontamination and sterile processing areas, communicating with operating room staff, applying principles of aseptic technique and precautions, assisting with inventory, and staying knowledgeable about regulatory standards like AAMI and ANSI. Collaboration with other disciplines to improve patient outcomes and ensure a smooth surgical experience is expected. The role also includes reporting occurrences, contributing to the developmental and educational process of colleagues and students, participating in continuing education, and managing controllable costs through responsible resource use.
