About The Position
The Sterile Processing Tech I is responsible for the decontamination, assembly, packaging, and sterilization of instruments and equipment. This role ensures that all items processed are safe for patient use and maintains a sterile environment within the department. The position involves working with various sterilization methods and managing inventory and distribution of sterile supplies.
Requirements
- High school education or equivalent.
- Ability to Communicate and Follow Directions.
- Good Human Relations Skills.
- Basic computer knowledge skills.
- Ability to adjust work schedule when need arises (i.e., illness/vacation of other staff members).
- Ability to work under time constraints in stressful situations.
- Heavy lifting, pushing and pulling: Lifting 50 to 100 pounds occasionally and/or 25 to 50 pounds frequently and/or 10 to 20 pounds constantly.
- Job responsibilities involve long periods of standing and walking.
- Frequent contact with blood and body fluids.
- TB testing yearly.
- Hepatitis testing at hire.
- Ability to respond quickly to emergency situation with full motor function.
- Strength and dexterity to handle sterilization equipment and supplies.
Nice To Haves
- 1 year experience preferred.
- Certified Central Service Tech preferred.
- Central Service Tech Certification Obtained within 12 Months Upon Hire (for current employees as of July 1st, 2013).
- Central Service Tech Certification Obtained within 12 Months Upon Hire.
Responsibilities
- Decontaminates soiled instrumentation and equipment to prevent cross-contamination, wearing proper protective attire.
- Follows established procedures for decontamination, including collection, setup, and cleaning of equipment and work areas.
- Handles infectious waste according to hospital procedures.
- Assembles surgical items, instrument sets, and floor trays, ensuring correct instruments and proper packaging for sterilization.
- Documents processed items and test pack results using the Aesculap Instacount Instrument Tracking program.
- Monitors and interprets sterilizer operation data, including chemical and biological monitors.
- Labels and positions items in sterilizers to ensure proper sterilization.
- Stores sterile items following first-in/first-out inventory control.
- Responds to requests for supplies, trays, and instruments promptly.
- Completes paperwork for supply requisitions and case carts for the Operating Room.
- Receives and restocks supplies from storerooms and outside vendors.
- Monitors quality assurance indicators and assists in revising policies and procedures.
- Acts as a Preceptor for new employees.
