About The Position

Provides supervisory responsibility and leadership for all activities performed in the 24-hour operation of the Sterile Processing department, ensuring sterilization of supplies and instrumentation to surgery and ancillary departments in the hospital.

Requirements

  • Four years of experience as a sterile processing technician or three years as a surgical technologist or other surgical services role and one year as a sterile processing technician
  • One year experience in a leadership role
  • High school diploma or equivalent
  • Graduation from a surgical technology or sterile processing technician program
  • Certified Surgical Technologist (CST) or sterile processing certification
  • Advanced computer skills
  • Excellent communication, organizational, and interpersonal skills

Responsibilities

  • Demonstrates efficient skills in decontamination, inspection, and cleaning of surgical instruments, flexible scopes, and respiratory devices according to manufacturer’s instructions for use.
  • Coordinates staff rotations and manages turnovers to minimize immediate use steam sterilization.
  • Uses sterile processing chemicals according to manufacturer’s instructions for use.
  • Dons and doffs appropriate personal protection equipment.
  • Inspects equipment testing documentation routinely for accuracy.
  • Checks daily assignments and creates monthly, holiday, code white, and on-call schedules based on employee ability, department, and surgical needs.
  • Reviews schedule for coordination of instrumentation turnover for surgical cases.
  • Leads all daily activities of Sterile Processing department.
  • Coordinates sterilizer and equipment monitoring.
  • Facilitates responses to potential and actual sterilization process failures.
  • Assigns educational in-services.
  • Supports and participates in continuous assessment and improvement of quality of services provided.
  • Monitors accuracy of case carts for emergent/urgent and elective cases.
  • Supervises support of operating room functions in sterile core.
  • Conducts operating room service rounds, capturing opportunities and methods of improvement.
  • Organizes orientation of technicians in all aspects of sterilization process and activity in Sterile Processing department operation.
  • Displays leadership skills, problem identification, problem-solving, assignments, communication, motivation, evaluations, daily direction of personnel, and disciplinary action.
  • Fosters positive working relationships across departments and campuses with patients, physicians, families, visitors, coworkers, and vendors.
  • Attends 75% of staff and leadership meetings/communication and job-related educational opportunities.
  • Performs all evaluations in accordance with Human Resources guidelines, documents department meetings, and maintains employee attendance records, in-services, and meeting documentation.
  • Provides input as necessary for completing annual budgets.
  • Assists manager with development of departmental goals and objectives.
  • Manages the day-to-day operations of the staff, including, but not limited to, work assignments, task management, time tracking/management, and on-the-job training.
  • Takes an active role in coaching and mentoring the team to ensure continued employee growth and success both on the team and at the broader CHOA organization.
  • Assists manager with employee performance evaluations and hiring decisions.
