Under limited supervision, this role plans and presents innovative, developmentally appropriate opportunities for students to learn subject matter and skills that will contribute to the development of students' academic abilities. The teacher may teach multiple disciplines as assigned, creates a classroom environment conducive to learning, and plans and prepares lesson plans and related activities for individual students or assigned classes. The role guides the learning process toward achievement of curriculum goals, establishes clear objectives for all lessons, and employs a variety of instructional techniques and media. The teacher grades student work, maintains accurate records, assesses student accomplishments, and reports suspected learning disabilities. This position also involves assisting school administration in implementing policies, maintaining classroom behavior, monitoring student activities for safety, and assisting individual students in need of special attention. Additionally, the role supervises teaching assistants and/or volunteers, maintains positive relationships with parents through conferences and workshops, and conducts home visits as necessary. The teacher maintains classroom supply inventory, coordinates or participates in special programs, and serves as an adviser to student organizations. Attendance at staff meetings, participation in in-service training, and making arrangements for substitute instructors are also required. The role involves operating various types of machinery and equipment including computers, printers, copiers, laminating machines, fax machines, audio-visual equipment, tape players, and curriculum-specific equipment or instruments. Additional functions may include providing remedial assistance and maintaining a clean and orderly classroom.
