About The Position

We are seeking an organized, outgoing, and service-oriented STEM Outreach and Events Coordinator to support the Office of Naval Research’s Naval STEM outreach initiatives. The primary focus of this position is engaging students, families, educators, and community partners and connecting them with Department of the Navy STEM education and internship opportunities. The coordinator will also provide hands-on event planning and logistics support for career fairs, student competitions, conferences, family STEM events, naval air shows, and other outreach activities. This includes coordinating event requirements, ordering and shipping materials, supporting on-site setup and breakdown, staffing exhibit booths, engaging attendees, and resolving logistical issues during events. The successful candidate must be comfortable representing Naval STEM programs in public-facing settings and traveling to approximately 10–20 events annually. Some events may require overnight travel or work outside normal business hours.

Requirements

  • U.S. citizenship.
  • Bachelor’s degree in communications, marketing, event management, public relations, education, or a related field.
  • At least three years of relevant experience in outreach, community engagement, customer service, event coordination, or a related field.
  • Recent experience planning or supporting in-person events, including event setup and on-site logistics.
  • Willingness and ability to travel to approximately 10–20 events per year.
  • Ability to interact professionally and confidently with students, families, educators, government personnel, and community partners.
  • Strong organizational skills and the ability to coordinate multiple deadlines, shipments, stakeholders, and event requirements.
  • Ability to work independently, exercise sound judgment, and resolve routine logistical or attendee issues in fast-paced, public-facing event environments.
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills.
  • Proficiency with Microsoft Word, PowerPoint, Outlook, SharePoint Online, Teams, and Excel.
  • Current SECRET clearance or the ability to obtain and maintain the required clearance within the timeframe established for the position.

Nice To Haves

Responsibilities

  • Represent Naval STEM programs at career fairs, conferences, student competitions, family STEM events, naval air shows, and other outreach activities.
  • Engage directly with students, families, educators, and community organizations to explain Department of the Navy STEM education and internship opportunities.
  • Communicate information about programs such as SEAP, NREIP, SMART, NDSEG, and other Naval STEM initiatives.
  • Plan and coordinate event logistics, including registration, schedules, staffing, shipping, venue requirements, booth assignments, equipment, and outreach materials.
  • Provide hands-on support for event setup, booth organization, attendee engagement, material distribution, breakdown, and post-event activities.
  • Coordinate with ONR personnel, naval laboratories and warfare centers, educational institutions, event organizers, vendors, and other stakeholders.
  • Order, track, ship, receive, inventory, and distribute program flyers, promotional items, banners, displays, and student engagement supplies.
  • Maintain event schedules, action-item trackers, contact lists, inventories, and other program records.
  • Collect and report event participation data, outcomes, lessons learned, and follow-up actions, and track post-event action items through completion.
  • Draft and edit outreach materials, event communications, presentations, social media content, and messages for diverse audiences.
  • Support social media and digital communications used to promote Naval STEM programs and events.
  • Use Microsoft 365 applications—including Word, PowerPoint, Outlook, SharePoint Online, Teams, and Excel—to support planning, reporting, tracking, and team collaboration.
  • Travel to approximately 10–20 events annually, including occasional multi-day, evening, or weekend events.
