About The Position

Ellwood Specialty Metals Company is a leading distributor and integrated producer of tool steels for various tooling applications, supplying steel and aluminum for automotive, aircraft, and consumer products. Due to rapid growth, we are seeking a Saw / Flow Operator to join our team. This position is located in Sterling Heights, MI, and reports to the Operations Manager.

Requirements

  • Working mechanical knowledge/aptitude applicable with experience.
  • Ability to understand basic correspondence, instructions, rules, policies, graphs, and/or charts.
  • Ability to learn from written passages by discerning the main idea or key facts.
  • Ability to perform basic arithmetic (addition, subtraction, multiplication, division) and use basic numerical concepts (whole numbers, percentages).
  • Ability to use measuring devices such as tapes and gauges.
  • Vision includes acuity near and far, color, peripheral vision, and depth perception.
  • Hearing ability to exchange information with co-workers and management.
  • Must submit to a criminal background investigation.
  • Must pass pre-employment physical and drug screening.

Responsibilities

  • Receives, stores, handles, cuts, and ships material to meet shop and customer requirements.
  • Loads and unloads material using a forklift or overhead crane.
  • Completes paperwork and updates the computer system for inventory management.
  • Sets up and operates saw equipment, selecting appropriate feeds and speeds, and maintaining coolant concentration.
  • Inspects material quality for squareness after cutting.
  • Uses measuring instruments such as tape measures and micrometers.
  • Checks and stamps/marks identification on all material handled.
  • Places saw crop ends in scrap boxes according to material grade.
  • Performs saw blade changes as needed.
  • Delivers material to the next operation area.
  • Completes production reports using the computer system.
  • Reports defective material and faulty equipment to the Operations Manager or Maintenance Department.
  • Maintains a clean and safe work environment, adhering to plant safety regulations.
  • Performs safety inspections on cranes, chains, slings, and magnets.
  • Performs other duties as assigned.
