About The Position

Ellwood Specialty Metals Company is a leading distributor and integrated producer of tool steels for various tooling applications, supplying steel and aluminum for automotive, aircraft, and consumer products. Due to rapid growth, we have an opening for a Saw / Flow Operator I at our Sterling Heights, MI facility. This non-exempt position reports to the Operations Manager.

Requirements

  • Working mechanical knowledge/aptitude.
  • Ability to understand basic correspondence, instructions, rules, policies, graphs, and charts.
  • Ability to learn from written passages by discerning the main idea or key facts.
  • Ability to perform basic arithmetic (addition, subtraction, multiplication, division) and use basic numerical concepts (whole numbers, percentages).
  • Ability to use measuring devices such as tapes and gauges where reading is direct and obvious.
  • Vision includes acuity near and far, color, peripheral vision, and depth perception.
  • Hearing ability to exchange information with co-workers and management.
  • Must submit to a criminal background investigation.
  • Must pass pre-employment physical and drug screening upon offer of employment.

Responsibilities

  • Receives, stores, handles, cuts, and ships material to meet shop and customer requirements.
  • Loads and unloads material using a forklift or overhead crane, positioning it as required.
  • Completes paperwork and updates inventory in the computer system.
  • Sets up and operates saw equipment, selecting and adjusting appropriate feeds and speeds.
  • Maintains coolant concentration, cleaning or replacing as needed.
  • Inspects material quality (squareness) during and after cutting.
  • Uses measuring instruments such as tape measures and micrometers.
  • Stamps or marks material with necessary identification numbers.
  • Places saw crop ends in scrap boxes according to material grade.
  • Performs saw blade changes when necessary.
  • Delivers material to the next operation area.
  • Completes production reports using the computer system.
  • Reports defective material and faulty equipment to the Operations Manager or Maintenance Department.
  • Maintains a clean and safe work environment, adhering to all plant safety regulations and work rules.
  • Performs safety inspections on cranes, chains, slings, and magnets.
  • Performs other duties as assigned.
