About The Position

The Steel Estimator is responsible for the accurate and timely preparation of full-cost estimates for all steel-related projects. They are also responsible for quantifying material, labour, and subcontractor pricing for all types of steel-related tenders. Other duties include regular communication with the estimating team and clients, generating new steel sales, and managing steel supply projects. This individual works closely with the project management team and other key disciplines to continually improve estimating processes and standards.

Requirements

  • High school diploma, G.E.D. or equivalent.
  • Ability to read and interpret build specifications, blueprints, and as-builds.
  • Mathematical skills and analytical skills are necessary to do material and labor estimates, as well as interpret job cost reports.
  • Strong working knowledge of Microsoft Office (Excel, Word, etc.).
  • Client service and public interaction skills.
  • Ability to work in a team environment with minimum supervision.
  • Customer focused - respond promptly to customer needs and establish and maintain effective relationships with customers.
  • Effective verbal and listening communication skills.
  • Time management and multi-tasking skills.
  • You must have a valid driver's license.

Nice To Haves

  • Post-secondary degree or diploma in construction, an engineering degree, or an appropriate field is considered an asset.
  • Min (5) years of manufacturing experience, business development, cost estimating, and project management are preferable and considered an asset.

Responsibilities

  • Prepare and coordinate all cost estimates on conceptual designs, design-build, or general tender work.
  • Review proposal specifications and drawings to determine the scope of work and required contents of estimate.
  • Ensure the quote tracker is updated daily for all quotes that are assigned to the estimator and closed once completed.
  • Evaluate and recommend allowances for indirect costs, design unknowns, escalation, and contingency.
  • Responsible for managing steel supply projects with respect to cost, schedule, and project performance.
  • Reviews project cost reports and ensures accuracy of cost allocation to projects.
  • Present estimates and conduct review meetings with senior management and clients.
  • Maintain files of working documents on the company server/database as back-up, for estimate figures, including current (accurate) information on prices from suppliers through direct contact, sales brochures, price lists, etc.
  • Review all final estimate packages to ensure accuracy and completeness, prior to formal quotation.
