About The Position

This role involves operating and maintaining low pressure steam boilers that supply steam for heating buildings and generating power for industrial purposes. The technician will also perform water chemical analysis for boiler treatment and operate automated or computerized systems to control boilers and associated equipment to meet program and business objectives. The position requires monitoring gauge readings, adjusting temperature and pressure, activating valves, and adding chemicals to boiler feed water. Maintenance and repair duties include diagnostic troubleshooting, modifying and repairing electrical, electronic, hydraulic, pneumatic, and mechanical systems. A preventive maintenance program must be carried out, including annual boiler disassembly, cleaning, reassembly, and regular maintenance tasks like cleaning compressors, tightening pipes, and replacing/repairing piping and valves. The technician will maintain a logbook, interpret drawings, schematics, and diagrams, and set up/maintain workstations, including control of age-controlled items, hazardous materials, and consumables. Computer skills are necessary for time recording, machine systems, business instructions, and trend data analysis. The role also involves identifying opportunities to apply AI for continuous improvement and innovation.

Requirements

High school diploma or general education degree (GED).
Minimum of 5 years of experience as a boiler operator for low pressure steam boilers (operating pressure under 15 psi).
Experience with regular preventative maintenance of boilers as described in ASME CSD-1.
Experience preparing boilers for required inspections.
Ability to operate automated or computerized systems that control boilers and other associated equipment.
Ability to monitor readings of gauges, panel board instruments, and record charts.
Ability to check temperature and pressure and make adjustments.
Ability to activate valves to maintain water levels, adjust combustion air, and control fuel flow.
Ability to add chemicals into boiler feed water.
Ability to perform diagnostic troubleshooting, modify and/or make repairs to electrical, electronic circuits, and hydraulic, pneumatic, and mechanical systems.
Ability to carry out a preventive maintenance program.
Ability to disassemble and reassemble boilers after cleaning and inspection.
Ability to perform regular maintenance such as cleaning and lubricating compressors or tightening pipes/fittings and replacement/repair of piping and valves.
Ability to keep a logbook recording boiler operation.
Ability to read, interpret and work to drawings, schematics, wiring lists and diagrams, work instructions, sketches, work tasks and verbal directions.
Ability to set up and maintain workstation and related materials, control of age-controlled items and hazardous materials and consumables.
Ability to maintain certificates, licenses, and registrations required for the position.
Ability to maintain the work area and perform duties in a safe manner.
Computer skills and ability to operate various computer programs related to time recording, machine systems, and business instructions.
Ability to do various trend data analysis of boiler operation and gas consumption.
Ability to add, subtract, multiply, and divide in all units of measure, using whole numbers, common fractions, and decimals.
Ability to compute ratios, percent, and interpret graphs.
Ability to do trigonometric functions.
Ability to read and interpret documents such as safety rules, operating and maintenance instructions, and procedure manuals.
Ability to write routine reports and correspondence.
Ability to speak effectively with other employees.
Ability to solve practical problems and deal with a variety of concrete variables in situations where only limited standardization exists.
Ability to interpret a variety of instructions furnished in written, oral, diagram, or schedule form.

Good eye-hand coordination and a high degree of manual dexterity.
Specific vision abilities required: close vision, distance vision, color vision, peripheral vision, depth perception, and ability to adjust focus.
Capable of operating a man lift to a height of 40 feet.
