About The Position

This role involves operating and maintaining low-pressure steam boilers that provide steam for heating buildings and generating power for industrial purposes. The technician will also be responsible for performing water chemical analysis for boiler treatment and operating automated or computerized systems to control boilers and associated equipment to meet program and business objectives efficiently and with high quality.

Requirements

  • High school diploma or general education degree (GED).
  • Minimum of 5 years of experience as a boiler operator for low pressure steam boilers (operating pressure under 15 psi).
  • Experience with regular preventative maintenance as described in ASME CSD-1.
  • Experience preparing boilers for required inspections.
  • Ability to add, subtract, multiply, and divide in all units of measure, using whole numbers, common fractions, and decimals.
  • Ability to compute ratios, percent, and interpret graphs.
  • Ability to perform trigonometric functions.
  • Ability to read and interpret documents such as safety rules, operating and maintenance instructions, and procedure manuals.
  • Ability to write routine reports and correspondence.
  • Ability to speak effectively with other employees.
  • Ability to solve practical problems and deal with a variety of concrete variables in situations where only limited standardization exists.
  • Ability to interpret a variety of instructions furnished in written, oral, diagram, or schedule form.
  • Ability to question instructions when they are unclear.
  • Ability to stand, walk, stoop, kneel, crouch, crawl, climb stairs and ladders for 8 hours a day.
  • Ability to use hands to feel, reach with hands and arms, climb and balance.
  • Ability to talk and hear for 8 hours a day.
  • Ability to lift and/or move up to 10 pounds, frequently lift and/or move up to 25 pounds, and occasionally lift and/or move up to 40 pounds without mechanical assistance.
  • Good eye-hand coordination and a high degree of manual dexterity.
  • Specific vision abilities required: close vision, distance vision, color vision, peripheral vision, depth perception, and ability to adjust focus.
  • Capability of operating a man lift to a height of 40 feet.
  • Computer skills and ability to operate various computer programs related to their position for time recording, machine systems and business instructions.
  • Must be able to maintain the certificates, licenses and registrations required for their positions.

Responsibilities

  • Operate and maintain low pressure boilers that supply steam to heat buildings and generate power for industrial purposes.
  • Perform water chemical analysis to treat the boilers.
  • Operate automated or computerized systems that control the boilers and other equipment.
  • Monitor readings of gauges, panel board instruments and record charts to ensure proper boiler operation.
  • Check temperature and pressure and make necessary adjustments.
  • Activate valves to maintain the required amount of water in a boiler, adjust combustion air supply, and control fuel flow.
  • Add specific amounts of chemicals into the boiler feed water to control lime build-up or adjust alkaline levels.
  • Perform diagnostic troubleshooting, modification, and repair of electrical, electronic, hydraulic, pneumatic, and mechanical systems.
  • Carry out a preventive maintenance program for equipment.
  • Disassemble and reassemble boilers after cleaning and inspection on a yearly basis.
  • Perform regular maintenance such as cleaning and lubricating compressors, tightening pipes/fittings, and replacing/repairing piping and valves.
  • Keep a logbook recording boiler operations.
  • Read, interpret, and work to drawings, schematics, wiring lists and diagrams, work instructions, sketches, work tasks, and verbal directions.
  • Perform related duties as required.
  • Set up and maintain workstation and related materials, control of age-controlled items, hazardous materials, and consumables.
  • Maintain certificates, licenses, and registrations required for the position.
  • Maintain the work area and perform duties in a safe manner.
  • Utilize computer skills and operate various computer programs for time recording, machine systems, and business instructions.
  • Perform trend data analysis of boiler operation and gas consumption.
  • Identify opportunities to apply AI for continuous improvement and innovation.
