About The Position

The State of Connecticut Department of Veterans Affairs (DVA) is seeking to fill one full-time Stationary Engineer position to support operations in our Power Plant in Rocky Hill. Requirements

Three (3) years of experience in the operation, maintenance, and repair of steam boilers or of significant auxiliary boiler room or power plant equipment.
Ability to operate, maintain and repair boilers, generators and related mechanical equipment.
Interpersonal skills.
Oral and written communication skills.
Ability to utilize computer software.

Nice To Haves

Experience with the equipment and processes related to steam generation.
Experience with testing and adjusting the water chemistry in a boiler system.
Experience with the maintenance of power plant equipment, including pumps, valve maintenance, regulators, and generators.
Experience working with 150psi or higher steam pressure.
Experience working in an environment that operates 24 hours a day, 7 days a week, 365 days per year.

Responsibilities

Keep boilers, steam systems, and plant equipment running safely and efficiently.
Troubleshoot mechanical issues and make real-time adjustments to prevent downtime.
Perform hands-on maintenance and repairs on pumps, valves, generators, and related systems.
Support reliable facility operations for a 24/7 campus serving Connecticut Veterans.
Work as part of a skilled team that values dependability, safety, and technical expertise.
Upon taking over a shift, receive operating instructions from the outgoing shift engineer.
Inspect boiler room gauges, indicators, charts, and records of operation, and the actual operation of the boiler room mechanical equipment and boilers, and issue any necessary instructions to subordinates.
Act similarly in regard to generating equipment if any.
Make various periodic and special tests and checks of facilities and equipment, making necessary adjustments.
Maintain and repair mechanical equipment, including tightening loose bearings, packing glands, and bolts, replacing wearing rings, replacing and repacking condenser tubes, renewing gaskets, renewing valves and stuffing boxes, and renewing valve parts.
Inspect operation of, maintain and repair generating equipment, ice machinery, hot water heaters, laundry equipment, pumps, fans, compressors, electronic equipment, and other miscellaneous mechanical service equipment.
Make or supervise the making of simple boiler water analyses and determine necessary treatment.
Calculate and record operating data.
Perform minor tests for fuel specific gravity and gas leaks.
Add water treatment chemicals to boilers.
May assist in general building maintenance and repair.
May inspect and repair steam traps fed by the main system at various locations.
May remove pipe insulation materials associated with the repair of pipes and fittings using OSHA approved methods.
Perform related duties as required.
As engineer in charge of a heating plant and related minor utilities: Perform and supervise maintenance and repair of boiler and boiler room equipment including feed pumps and fuel injectors or stokers.
Supervise tending of boiler by others, issuing instructions, inspecting condition of equipment, and checking gauges and operation records.
