About The Position

The Laboratory Manager’s primary responsibility is to ensure technical compliance with unit, departmental, and division policies for the scientists, examiners, and technicians working within the Latent Prints Unit. This position also serves as the liaison between the technical leader and the Laboratory Director. Responsibilities include case management for the Latent Prints Unit, overseeing discipline-specific training until competency is achieved, and serving as acting Laboratory Director when needed. This position functions in a bias free manner. The Michigan State Police (MSP) is a full-service policing agency with statewide jurisdiction, providing over 60 different services either directly to Michigan residents or in support of other law enforcement agencies. The MSP personnel most visible to the public are the uniform troopers whose primary responsibilities include traffic enforcement, crime prevention and investigation, and community engagement and service.

Requirements

• Possession of a bachelor's degree in forensic science, chemistry, biochemistry, biology, microbiology, or a related pure or applied science.
• Two years of experience equivalent to a Forensic Scientist 12 or a State Police Specialist (Sergeant) or State Police Sergeant 12 in the State Police Forensic Science Division.
• Passing a pre-employment screening, including a drug screen, criminal history background check, and a fingerprint check by the Michigan State Police.
• Possession of a valid Michigan driver's license.
• For MSP Enlisted Applicants: Must have previously taken and passed the State Police Lieutenants Examination (No. 2022).
• For MSP Enlisted Applicants: Must be eligible for selection pursuant to Official Order 03-41 - Impact of discipline or corrective action on selection eligibility.
• For MSP Enlisted Applicants: Must be able to perform the essential duties of the job upon appointment.

Nice To Haves

• Alternate Education and Experience for Latent Prints and Questioned Documents specialty areas: possession of a bachelor’s degree in natural science, criminal justice, forensic science, or a related pure or applied science with 8 semester hours in chemistry and two years of experience as a State Police Specialist (Sergeant) or State Police Sergeant 12 in the State Police Forensic Science Division may be substituted for the education and experience requirement.
• Specific positions may require that applicants have experience in specialized areas.
