About The Position

The Vermont Department of Forests, Parks, and Recreation (FPR) is recruiting for a State Lands Forester in the Barre District of the Division of Forests. This division manages a wide variety of public lands and works to protect and enhance forestland, natural resources, and outdoor recreation throughout Vermont. This role involves implementing forest and land stewardship projects in central Vermont, managing 103,000 acres of public land as part of a collaborative team of resource professionals. The State Lands Forester will be involved in all aspects of state lands management, including forest management, recreation management, wildlife habitat management, planning, and related duties. The position focuses on forest resource management, conducting forest resource inventory, assessment, and management, including timber sale preparation and administration. Responsibilities also include implementing forest road maintenance and rehabilitation projects, invasive plant management, timber stand improvement, and habitat management projects. The role contributes to long-range management planning and recreation project planning and management. The position will develop and oversee contracts and may direct seasonal staff. The successful candidate will possess applicable knowledge or skills in forestry, forest management, forest ecology, forest-based recreation, GIS, communication, project management, and relationship building.

Requirements

  • Obtain a Vermont Foresters License within six months of hire
  • Willingness to travel within the state
  • Operate a chainsaw
  • Obtain a Vermont Pesticide Applicator's License (Category 2)
  • Current State of Vermont Forester License or eligibility for licensure within one year of hire and possession within 1.5 years of hire
  • Associate’s degree in forestry, natural resources, biological or earth science, or wildlife management AND four (4) years or more of experience in forestry, natural resources management, biological or earth science, or wildlife management, or an environmental field.
  • Bachelor's degree in forestry, natural resources, biological or earth science, or wildlife management AND two (2) years or more of experience in forestry, natural resources management, biological or earth science, wildlife management or an environmental field.
  • Master's degree or higher in forestry, natural resources, biological or earth science, or wildlife management AND one (1) year or more of experience in forestry, natural resources management, biological or earth science, wildlife management, or an environmental field.
  • One (1) year or more as Forestry Professional II with the State of Vermont.
  • Licensed as forester by the State of Vermont.
