About The Position

A state inspector auto repair job involves diagnosing and certifying vehicles to ensure they meet mandatory state safety and emissions standards. They test components, perform needed repairs, and document their findings so owners can legally register their vehicles or pass compliance checks.

Requirements

  • Must hold a valid state-issued Vehicle Inspector license (requirements and tests vary heavily by state, such as Maryland State Inspection or NYVIP in New York).
  • Typically requires 2-5 years of experience as an automotive technician, mechanic, or equivalent fleet maintenance work.
  • Strong understanding of vehicle diagnostics, suspension systems, and emissions regulations

Responsibilities

  • Conduct comprehensive safety and emissions checks—including brakes, steering, suspension, tires, exhaust, and fuel systems.
  • Utilize state-approved diagnostic equipment and submit inspection results directly to the relevant state department (e.g., the Motor Vehicle Administration or State Police).
  • Identify damaged, worn, or unsafe parts, provide repair estimates, and communicate needed maintenance with service advisors or customers.
  • Complete mechanical repairs and conduct thorough re-inspections to ensure the vehicle passes all regulatory standards.
