About The Position

The State Government Affairs Intern will support CTA's state legislative affairs program by tracking technology policy legislation across target states, conducting research, and providing administrative and programmatic support for CTA's state initiatives including the CES Leaders in Technology (LIT) State Program and the State Government Affairs Council (SGAC). The intern will work directly with the Manager of Technology Policy and State Legislative Affairs and gain hands-on experience in technology policy advocacy, state legislative strategy, and stakeholder engagement.

Requirements

  • Currently enrolled in or recently graduated from a bachelor's or graduate degree program in public policy, political science, government, law, communications, or a related field.
  • Strong research, writing, and organizational skills
  • Ability to manage multiple priorities and deadlines in a fast-paced environment
  • Excellent attention to detail
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Office suite (Word, Excel, Outlook)
  • Interest in technology policy and state legislative affairs
  • Ability to work independently and as part of a small, collaborative team
  • Professional demeanor and discretion in handling sensitive information

Nice To Haves

  • Prior experience or coursework in government affairs, public policy, political science, or a related field preferred.
  • Experience with legislative research, policy writing, or political campaigns is a plus.
  • Familiarity with technology policy issues is beneficial but not required.

Responsibilities

  • Monitor and track state technology policy legislation across target states using CTA's bill tracking tools, including identifying bills related to artificial intelligence, autonomous vehicles, and other technology policy areas
  • Assist with preparation of the biweekly SGAC member update email including drafting summaries of legislative activity and upcoming priorities
  • Support the CES LIT State Program by assisting with legislator outreach, registration tracking, and coordination with CTA's consultants and third-party coalition partners
  • Conduct legislative and policy research on emerging state technology issues and prepare briefing materials and summaries for internal use
  • Assist with drafting correspondence, talking points, and administrative materials in support of the state government affairs function
  • Maintain and update state official contact lists and consultant tracking spreadsheets
  • Coordinate scheduling and logistics for state check-in calls and internal meetings
  • Support outreach to state legislators, governors' offices, state government agencies and coalition partners as directed
  • Assist with preparation for CTA events including roundtables, dinners, and the CES LIT State Program
