About The Position

A "Standardized Participant" (SP) is a person who has been carefully trained to portray all of the characteristics of a real patient, family member, or clinical team member in order to provide an opportunity for a student to learn, or be evaluated on, clinical skills first hand. SPs portray cases, which are based on actual encounters by healthcare providers. Standardized Participants are utilized in the training and evaluation of health care professionals and are trained to simulate the signs and symptoms of the actual patient. SPs are often interviewed, counseled, and physically examined by students as part of the learning environment. SPs are carefully trained to provide feedback to the students, especially with regard to communication and interpersonal skills. Standardized Participants are interviewed and examined by male and female health care students and may be audio or videotaped during simulation.
