About The Position

The Stagehand fills crew requirements for stage productions, load-ins, load-outs, installations, and maintenance of stage spaces. The role assists with loading and unloading scenery and stage equipment for incoming performing companies; installs lighting, scenery, flying scenery, or costume elements; and may perform costume maintenance and repair. Stagehands work as part of production running crews, assist with the design or execution of lighting, sound, rigging, scenery, or costumes, and operate, adapt, or repair theatrical technical equipment. Duties may also include supporting films by recording and editing filmmaker introductions and Q&As, preparing branded trailers, and creating advertising commercials. Other duties or projects may be assigned as appropriate to the position’s rank and departmental mission.

Stagehands are tiered according to experience and skill. Stagehand 1 is novice level, with 0–2 years of prior experience, and performs basic production tasks such as pushing boxes, coiling cables, cleaning and organizing stages, setting up chairs and stands under supervision, and installing lighting or sound under supervision. Stagehand 2 is intermediate level, with 2–5 years of prior experience, and performs Stagehand 1 tasks reliably, may sling weight or work slots, operates follow spots, places microphones, works the fly rail or in a genie lift, sets up chairs and stands independently, patches lights on the light board, and performs other intermediate production tasks. Stagehand 3 is experienced level, with 2–5 years of prior experience, and performs Stagehand 2 tasks reliably, independently installs lights and sound with other crew members, assists with line checks, completes channel checks, may serve as rail captain, can execute and manage a basic concert or event independently, and regularly takes lead crew positions. Stagehand 4 is professional level, with 5 or more years of prior experience, and performs Stagehand 3 tasks reliably, runs a light and/or sound board, has stage-management experience, can run a department for a large show, regularly takes manager crew positions, and provides leadership to crew members.

This is a part-time, FLSA non-exempt appointment eligible for FLSA overtime provisions. Evening and weekend work may be required at times. The university is unable to sponsor candidates for work visas. Applicants should include a resume/CV and cover letter with the online application.

Requirements

• Associate's degree or foreign equivalent; alternatively, two years of directly related full-time experience or a combination of education and experience totaling two years may be considered.
• Experience in at least one technical area: stage electrics, stage carpentry, stage rigging, costuming, or theater sound/video projection, including associated terminology.
• Stagehand experience expectations vary by tier: Stagehand 1, 0–2 years; Stagehand 2, 2–5 years; Stagehand 3, 2–5 years; Stagehand 4, 5 or more years.
• Evening and weekend work may be required at times.

• Supervisory stage work experience.
• Experience in more than one technical area: stage electrics, stage carpentry, stage rigging, costuming, or theater sound, including associated terminology.
• Prior experience working in an Arts Center.
