About The Position

The Stagehand position involves providing technical support for stage productions, including managing load-ins, load-outs, installations, and maintaining stage areas. Responsibilities encompass assisting with scenery and stage equipment, installing and maintaining lighting, scenery, flying scenery, and costumes, and working as part of a running crew. The role also includes operating, adapting, and repairing theatrical technical equipment, and supporting film productions through recording, editing, and creating promotional content. The position is structured into four tiers (Stagehand 1-4) based on experience and skill, with duties progressing from basic production tasks for novices to independent department management and leadership for professionals.

Requirements

  • Associate's degree (foreign equivalent or higher).
  • In lieu of an Associate’s degree, two [2] years of directly related full-time experience or a combination of education and experience totaling two [2] years may be considered.
  • Experience working in at least one of the following technical areas: Stage electrics, stage carpentry, stage rigging, costuming, theater sound video projection and associated terminology.
  • Stagehand 1: Novice Level 0-2 years prior experience
  • Stagehand 2: Intermediate Level 2-5 years prior experience
  • Stagehand 3: Experienced Level 2-5 years prior experience
  • Stagehand 4: Professional Level 5+ years prior experience

Nice To Haves

  • Supervisory stage work experience.
  • Experience in more than one of the following technical areas: Stage electrics, stage carpentry, stage rigging, costuming, theater sound and associated terminology.
  • Prior experience working in an Arts Center.

Responsibilities

  • Fill crew requirements for stage productions, load-ins, load-outs, installations, maintenance of stage spaces.
  • Assist in the loading and unloading of scenery and stage equipment as required by incoming performing companies.
  • Installation of lighting, scenery or flying scenery or costume maintenance and repair for a production.
  • Work as part of a running crew for a production.
  • Assist in the design or execution of either lighting, sound, rigging, scenery or costumes.
  • Operate, adapt, repair theatrical technical equipment.
  • Support for films: recording and editing introductions, Q&A with the filmmaker, branding trailer for each film, and creating commercials for advertising.
  • Perform other duties or projects as assigned as appropriate to rank and departmental mission.

  • Perform other basic Production tasks as assigned by crew leaders (Stagehand 1)
  • Proficiency and reliability in Stagehand 1 tasks (Stagehand 2)
  • Ability and willingness to sling weight (Stagehand 2)
  • Ability and willingness to work slots (Stagehand 2)
  • Ability to work the follow spots (Stagehand 2)
  • Placing Microphones (Stagehand 2)
  • Ability and willingness to work the fly rail (Stagehand 2)
  • Setting up chairs and stands for concert independently (Stagehand 2)
  • Ability and willingness to work in genie lift (Stagehand 2)
  • Patching lights on the light board (Stagehand 2)
  • Perform other intermediate Production tasks as assigned (Stagehand 2)
  • Proficiency and reliability in Stagehand 2 tasks (Stagehand 3)
  • Independence in installing lights with other crew members (Stagehand 3)
  • Independence in installing sound with other crew members (Stagehand 3)
  • Knowledge and leadership in stagehand 2 tasks (Stagehand 3)
  • Assisting with the line check (Stagehand 3)
  • Completing a channel check (Stagehand 3)
  • Ability and willingness to be rail captain (Stagehand 3)
  • Ability to execute and manage a basic concert/event independently (Stagehand 3)
  • Regularly take on Lead crew positions (Stagehand 3)
  • Proficiency and reliability in Stagehand 3 tasks (Stagehand 4)
  • Run a Light and/or Sound Board (Stagehand 4)
  • Stage Management experience (Stagehand 4)
  • Ability to run a department for a big show (lighting, sound, carpentry, etc.) (Stagehand 4)
  • Regularly take on Manager crew positions (Stagehand 4)
