About The Position

Questrade Financial Group (QFG), through its various companies, provides a range of financial services including securities and foreign currency investment, professionally managed investment portfolios, mortgages, and real estate services. QFG leverages cutting-edge technology and combines human-centric collaboration with AI-driven innovation to enhance financial services and customer experiences. The company promotes a diverse, inclusive, and hybrid work environment. This job posting is for a Staff Writer within QuestMedia, QFG's new in-house, multi-format content division. QuestMedia aims to redefine how Canadians learn about money, markets, and financial life, with its flagship publication, The Margin, covering money and culture beyond typical personal finance advice. The Staff Writer will be a foundational team member, working with the Deputy Editor and Content Lead to shape and grow QuestMedia by producing financial journalism with a distinct point of view.

Requirements

  • Be a strong writer capable of conducting interviews, building sources, verifying data, and producing engaging pieces with a human voice.
  • Understand the difference between an observation and an argument, and know how to build a piece around a thesis supported by reporting.
  • Be comfortable explaining complex topics clearly without condescending to readers, and be eager to learn about Canadian financial markets, products, and policy.
  • Be comfortable pitching angles outside typical market coverage, especially where money and culture intersect.
  • Have 2-4 years of experience in journalism, digital media, or content creation.
  • Possess a portfolio demonstrating voice and point of view, showcasing writing that sounds like a real person.
  • Have familiarity with Canadian personal finance (TFSAs, RRSPs, FHSAs) or enthusiasm to quickly get up to speed, understanding the unique dynamics of the Canadian market.
  • Be comfortable with reporting and interviews, including cold-pitching sources, conducting in-depth interviews, fact-checking, and weaving quotes into a cohesive piece while maintaining your voice.
  • Have the ability to write quickly without sacrificing quality, as some stories will require rapid turnaround.
  • Possess a collaborative mindset, taking feedback well, being willing to revise, and being excited to be part of a small team where everyone's input matters.
  • Hold a Bachelor's degree in journalism, communications, or a related field, or possess equivalent professional experience.

Nice To Haves

  • Experience in business or financial journalism (if strong writing chops and genuine interest in the beat are present).
  • Experience writing about money, markets, or economics (as a bonus for portfolio).
  • Podcasting and/or on-camera experience.

Responsibilities

  • Content creation: Report, interview sources, and produce compelling stories based on research. Write 3-5 pieces per week across formats, including quick daily hits responding to market news or cultural moments, medium-length analyses, and occasional longer reported features and deep dives.
  • Reporting: Conduct interviews with financial experts, industry insiders, and individuals navigating Canadian financial systems. Source and verify data from Canadian institutions (StatsCan, Bank of Canada, industry associations). Build relationships with sources for informed, credible perspectives.
  • Collaboration: Work with the Content Lead and Deputy Editor to develop story angles, refine arguments, and shape content strategy. Participate in editorial meetings, pitch ideas, and contribute to the overall editorial direction of The Margin.
  • Cross-platform contributions: Contribute where needed, including appearing in social videos, participating in podcast discussions, or helping shape new content formats.
