About The Position

Waabi is a leader in Physical AI, developing technology for autonomous transportation, including commercial autonomous trucks and robotaxis. The company is focused on ensuring the safety of its systems by translating vehicle-level safety concepts into embedded platform requirements, architecture, and interfaces. This role is crucial for bridging the gap between the overarching systems and safety group's vehicle-level safety concepts and the embedded architecture and technical safety requirements needed by the electrical engineering and embedded software teams. The position involves working on the left side of the ISO 26262 V-model, transforming functional safety concepts into trusted technical requirements and hardware/software architectures, and ensuring the embedded organization stays current with automotive standards.

Requirements

  • BS/MS in Electrical Engineering, Computer Engineering, Systems Engineering, or a related field, or equivalent hands-on experience.
  • 8+ years in embedded systems, with significant experience in both hardware and software.
  • Strong ISO 26262 experience, particularly in system design (Part 4) and its interfaces with hardware (Part 5) and software (Part 6), including deriving technical safety requirements, system architectural design, and hardware/software allocation.
  • Working familiarity with automotive standards such as SOTIF (ISO 21448), automotive cybersecurity (ISO/SAE 21434), autonomous-product safety cases (UL 4600), Automotive SPICE (ASPICE), and component/coding standards like AEC-Q10.
  • Fluency with requirements management and traceability tools (e.g., Polarion).
  • Ability to read schematics and reason about embedded C/C++/Rust.
  • Clear understanding of the full V-model and how left-side work enables right-side success.

Nice To Haves

  • Experience establishing or maturing a standard (ASPICE, 21434, or similar) within an engineering organization.
  • SysML or model-based systems engineering experience.
  • Experience in AV, ADAS, or other complex safety-critical domains.
  • Direct experience authoring or negotiating DIAs with an OEM.

Responsibilities

  • Partner with the systems and safety group to take vehicle-level safety concepts, safety goals, and functional safety requirements as inputs, and provide embedded expertise back into their hazard analysis and concept work.
  • Own the embedded technical safety concept by deriving technical safety requirements from the functional safety concept allocated to the embedded system and allocating each to the appropriate architectural element.
  • Define the embedded system architecture and the hardware/software partition, including the hardware-software interface (HSI), to ensure coherent design across hardware and software groups.
  • Maintain bidirectional traceability from safety goals to hardware and software requirements, and manage work products that support the safety case.
  • Steward automotive standards for the embedded organization, staying current on functional safety, SOTIF, cybersecurity, autonomous-product safety, process and component qualification, and integrating them into daily design, documentation, and work practices.
  • Define requirements and architecture that set up the right side of the V-model for verification and validation, and partner with the V&V effort and support Development Interface Agreements (DIAs) with OEM partners and suppliers.
