About The Position

ICON is seeking a Staff Structural Engineer to own and advance structural engineering as a product development discipline. The role translates structural expertise into requirements, rulesets, tools, and technical resources that make ICON’s building products and systems designable, verifiable, and executable at scale. The position serves as ICON’s primary structural product development authority, supporting ICON divisions, customers, external partners, and technology product teams. The engineer develops and maintains structural requirements, design standards, calculations, workflows, and technical documentation as ICON’s systems expand into new markets, building uses, and climate zones. The role ensures alignment with applicable building codes and design standards, supports product testing and code-compliance pathways, and provides technical resolution for complex structural questions and field conditions. The position also contributes structural engineering requirements and expertise to BuildOS product development, identifies and resolves gaps in product systems, manages assigned initiatives and risks, and incorporates customer-support and field experience into product requirements. It includes technical support for consultant teams, internal and external representation of ICON’s structural capabilities, and periodic visits to field installations and partner locations to observe performance and validate design assumptions. Field engagements typically involve no more than one to two overnight trips per engagement.

Requirements

  • Bachelor’s degree in Civil Engineering, Structural Engineering, or a related discipline.
  • Licensed Professional Engineer (PE) in at least one U.S. jurisdiction.
  • 12 or more years of structural engineering experience, or 8 or more years with a master’s degree.
  • Demonstrated experience working across multidisciplinary teams in fast-paced, cross-functional environments.
  • Strong command of ACI, ASCE, and TMS design codes and their application across building types and jurisdictions.
  • Ability to translate complex structural engineering concepts into clear documentation, technical guidance, and product requirements.
  • Track record of managing multiple workstreams and driving technical initiatives to completion without close supervision.
  • Proficiency with structural engineering tools, including CSI Suite software (ETABS and SAP2000), MathCAD, Excel-based engineering calculation workflows, and Revit for structural documentation and coordination.

Nice To Haves

  • Graduate degree in Structural Engineering or a related discipline.
  • Experience with productized building systems and/or non-traditional construction methods, such as modular, prefabricated, or 3D-printed construction.
  • Exposure to software-enabled design workflows and/or engineering logic automation in a product development context.
  • Experience supporting customer-facing technical engagements in a design-build or AEC technology environment.
  • Background in computational design, numerical methods, or structural programming.
  • Familiarity with sustainability aspects of structural material systems, including embodied carbon and life cycle assessment.

Responsibilities

  • Serve as ICON’s primary structural engineering subject matter expert for Building Products and Systems, providing technical input and direction to technology product teams, divisions, and external partners.
  • Develop, maintain, and evolve structural engineering requirements, design standards, and calculations as systems and product offerings expand.
  • Address complex structural questions from cross-functional teams, escalated customer engagements, and development partners.
  • Maintain alignment with applicable structural building codes and design standards, including ACI, ASCE, and TMS, and define appropriate product testing for code compliance and product requirements.
  • Act as the primary technical escalation point for structural questions and out-of-spec conditions that exceed customer support teams’ ability to resolve independently.
  • Interface with the Building Regulatory Affairs team on code compliance pathways.
  • Translate structural expertise into scalable rulesets, design workflows, and structured technical documentation for consistent use across projects and geographies.
  • Define structural engineering requirements and provide technical input for BuildOS products; review their implementation as a subject matter expert in software product development workflows.
  • Identify gaps in structural product systems, document findings, propose solutions, and drive resolution across cross-functional teams.
  • Maintain a current, structured workplan for assigned initiatives using Jira and related project management tools, and proactively surface risks, dependencies, and timeline pressures to BACS leadership.
  • Maintain structured intake of field-surfaced structural conditions, SEOR-identified edge cases, and applied project outcomes; translate recurring patterns into product requirements and close gaps between applied experience and the validated product system.
  • Review and support technical content and structural design guidance, including standard details, design requirements, and application frameworks.
  • Provide structural technical support to consultant teams working with ICON divisions on research and development projects.
  • Collaborate with ICON divisions and incorporate their feedback and field lessons into the structural development and integration of building products and systems.
  • Represent ICON’s structural engineering capabilities in internal technical forums and external conversations with customers, regulatory bodies, and industry partners as needed.
  • Periodically visit ICON field installations and partner locations to observe installation performance, identify product development inputs, and validate design assumptions against real-world conditions.
