Staff Structural Engineer

RINA•Chicago, IL
•$78,000 - $98,000

About The Position

RINA is recruiting a Staff Structural Engineer for its Plant Engineering Division, based in Houston, Texas, or Chicago/Lisle, Illinois. The role provides technical engineering services for the design, analysis, verification, and assessment of structural systems and components across buildings, infrastructure, foundations, and industrial facilities. The engineer contributes to feasibility studies, concept and detailed design, technical reviews, construction support, and assessment of existing structures. Working as a self-sufficient contributing professional under general supervision, the role takes direct technical responsibility for assigned scopes and helps ensure solutions are safe, compliant, technically sound, and aligned with applicable codes, standards, project specifications, and regulatory requirements. The position involves preparing and reviewing calculations, drawings, specifications, technical notes, and reports; supporting site inspections and technical evaluations; collaborating with multidisciplinary project teams and stakeholders; and contributing to quality, safety, risk mitigation, knowledge sharing, and continuous improvement. It also includes providing technical input and task-level guidance to junior engineers and technical staff within assigned projects. The stated compensation range is $78,000–$98,000, commensurate with education and experience.

Requirements

  • Bachelor’s degree in Civil Engineering or General Engineering.
  • At least 3 years of relevant structural engineering experience across buildings, infrastructure, or industrial projects.
  • Solid understanding of structural engineering principles, including statics, dynamics, and material behavior.
  • Ability to perform and validate structural calculations related to loads, pressures, and stresses with limited supervision.
  • Familiarity with structural design tools and modeling software, such as RISA 3D, SAP2000, ETABS, STAAD, or similar.
  • Knowledge of construction materials and applicable codes, standards, and regulatory frameworks.
  • Experience working in multidisciplinary engineering teams across different project phases.
  • Strong analytical, problem-solving, and communication skills, including the ability to contribute to technical documentation and project coordination.

Responsibilities

  • Design, analyze, verify, and technically assess structural works and components for buildings, infrastructure, foundations, and industrial systems.
  • Review and contribute to engineering documentation for compliance with project requirements, structural codes and standards, and internal procedures.
  • Support certification, verification, and engineering consultancy activities within the assigned technical scope, where applicable.
  • Perform structural analyses and calculations using recognized engineering methodologies and tools to evaluate loads, pressures, stresses, and structural behavior.
  • Contribute to feasibility studies, concept design, basic design, detailed design, and technical assessments for projects of moderate complexity.
  • Apply engineering judgment to develop safe, efficient, and cost-effective structural solutions.
  • Prepare and review drawings, specifications, calculation packages, technical notes, reports, design narratives, progress updates, and presentations.
  • Summarize and report assigned engineering activities to senior technical staff and project teams.
  • Provide technical problem-solving during design development, procurement, and construction.
  • Collaborate with multidisciplinary teams and interface with internal and external stakeholders on technical matters related to assigned scopes.
  • Conduct or support site inspections, field visits, and technical assessments to verify implementation, monitor progress, and evaluate structural conditions.
  • Support evaluation of existing structures, foundations, and structural components, and assist in resolving technical issues arising during project and site activities.
  • Perform engineering activities in compliance with regulations, health and safety requirements, quality standards, and internal governance rules.
  • Participate in technical reviews, checks, audits, and verification processes; identify technical risks and contribute to mitigation measures within assigned responsibilities.
  • Provide technical input and task-level guidance to junior engineers and technical staff.
  • Contribute to continuous improvement, lessons learned, knowledge sharing, and the development and maintenance of technical guidelines, methodologies, and best practices.
