About The Position

PayPal, Inc. seeks Staff Software Engineer in San Jose, CA. This role involves defining the overall technical architecture and long-term technology roadmap for products or platforms, making critical decisions about system design, technology stack choices, and ensuring scalability, security, and compliance for millions of transactions. The engineer will design complex, distributed systems for financial transactions, payments processing, fraud detection, or banking operations. Responsibilities include establishing architectural patterns, coding standards, and best practices; ensuring systems meet stringent security (PCI-DSS, SOC 2) and regulatory compliance standards; designing systems with security-first principles; mentoring senior engineers and architects; leading architectural discussions; collaborating with product managers, engineering managers, and executive leadership to align technical decisions with business goals; translating complex technical concepts for non-technical stakeholders; and ensuring systems are highly available, resilient, and performant, including disaster recovery and business continuity. Partial telecommuting is permitted from a commutable distance.

Requirements

  • Master’s degree, or foreign equivalent in Computer Science, Information Security, Engineering, or a closely related field plus six years of experience in the job offered or a related occupation.
  • Alternatively, a Bachelor’s degree, or foreign equivalent, in Computer Science, Information Security, Engineering or a closely related field plus eight years of experience in the job offered or a related occupation.

Responsibilities

  • Define the overall technical architecture and long-term technology roadmap for products or platforms.
  • Make critical decisions about system design, technology stack choices, and ensuring the architecture can scale to handle millions of transactions while maintaining security and compliance.
  • Design complex, distributed systems that handle financial transactions, payments processing, fraud detection, or banking operations.
  • Establish architectural patterns, coding standards, and best practices across engineering teams, ensuring consistency and maintainability.
  • Ensure systems meet stringent security requirements (PCI-DSS, SOC 2, etc.) and regulatory compliance standards.
  • Design systems with security-first principles, including data encryption, access controls, and audit trails.
  • Mentor senior engineers and architects, conduct architecture reviews, and guide multiple teams on technical decisions.
  • Lead architectural discussions and help resolve complex technical challenges across the organization.
  • Work closely with product managers, engineering managers, and executive leadership to align technical decisions with business goals.
  • Translate complex technical concepts for non-technical stakeholders and advocate for necessary technical investments.
  • Ensure systems are highly available, resilient, and performant— including designing for disaster recovery and business continuity.
