Staff Software Engineer, Full Stack

Gridware•San Francisco, CA

About The Position

Gridware is a San Francisco-based technology company focused on protecting and enhancing the electrical grid. It developed Active Grid Response (AGR), a grid-management approach that monitors electrical, physical, and environmental conditions affecting grid reliability and safety. Its platform uses high-precision sensors to detect potential issues early, supporting proactive maintenance and fault mitigation. The Staff Software Engineer will be a technical force multiplier, elevating the software engineering organization through architectural leadership, mentorship, and a culture of quality. The role designs and builds core platform systems across backend services and front-end tools used by customers and field teams. Working closely with Hardware, Firmware, Data, and ML teams, the engineer will help shape grid monitoring, fleet control, and real-time alerts for utilities. This is a high-ownership individual-contributor leadership role, with architecture decisions that affect physical infrastructure and community safety.

  • Background working in hardware-software ecosystems or IoT systems.

Responsibilities

  • Architect services that remain correct and responsive as the device fleet grows to hundreds of thousands of devices, accounting for failure modes, graceful degradation, and efficient data access.
  • Build automation into core workflows, including automatic hazard reporting, automated device health analysis, and remediations for Field Operations.
  • Own the technical vision for critical initiatives and drive system design decisions that keep the platform reliable and secure.
  • Foster a culture of ownership and high engineering standards, embedding code quality, testing, observability, performance, and operational excellence from the start.
  • Mentor engineers at every level and help develop future technical leaders.
