Staff Software Engineer, Chrome

Google•Mountain View, CA
•$207,000 - $300,000

About The Position

Google is hiring a Staff Software Engineer for Chrome Enterprise. The role focuses on the networking and security stack, including continuous identity and device-posture checks, customer-dedicated egress routing, GCP VPC integration, and multi-cloud connectivity. Systems operate in the critical path of enterprise productivity and must provide extreme resiliency, deep observability, and compliance with regulatory standards such as FedRAMP, DoD IL5, and HIPAA, without perceptible latency for users. The engineer will shape technical direction for CEP Secure Gateway and the broader Chrome Enterprise portfolio, architect globally distributed proxy infrastructure and integrations, and lead complex work across partner teams. The role also includes setting reliability and observability standards and mentoring senior engineers and emerging technical leads. Google software engineers work on projects critical to Google's needs, with opportunities to work across teams and projects as the business evolves.

Requirements

  • Bachelor's degree or equivalent practical experience.
  • 8 years of experience programming in C++.
  • 5 years of experience building and developing large-scale infrastructure, distributed systems or networks, or experience with compute technologies, storage, or hardware architecture.
  • 3 years of experience with cloud networking architectures in Google Cloud Platform or multi-cloud environments, such as VPCs, Private Service Connect, Cloud DNS, mTLS, and custom ingress/egress routing.

Nice To Haves

  • Master’s degree or PhD in Engineering, Computer Science, or a related technical field.
  • 3 years of experience in a technical leadership role leading project teams and setting technical direction.
  • 3 years of experience working in a complex, matrixed organization involving cross-functional or cross-business projects.
  • Experience in domains relevant to Chrome Enterprise, such as zero trust/identity and context-aware access systems, browser internals, or high-compliance cloud infrastructure.
  • Experience designing, building, and operating high-throughput, fault-tolerant distributed systems, inline network proxies such as Envoy, or network security platforms.
  • Proficiency in systems-level programming and concurrency, such as C++ or Go.

Responsibilities

  • Define and drive the multi-year technical outlook and architecture for CEP Secure Gateway and the broader Chrome Enterprise portfolio, aligning engineering roadmaps with product-area and company objectives.
  • Establish technical consensus across divergent viewpoints and lead complex, multi-quarter integrations across Chromium, Google Cloud teams, Workspace, and Safe Browsing.
  • Architect globally distributed proxy infrastructure, customer-dedicated egress routing, and GCP or multi-cloud VPC integrations capable of processing massive enterprise traffic with sub-millisecond latency overhead.
  • Set standards for mission-critical reliability and observability across inline traffic paths, including SLO governance, hop-by-hop telemetry, and adherence to regulatory compliance frameworks.
  • Mentor and coach senior engineers and emerging technical leads, improving design reviews, architectural decision-making, and engineering execution.
