About The Position

PayPal, Inc. seeks Staff Software Engineer in San Jose, CA. This role involves leading engineering efforts and team-level processes by defining outcomes, refining ongoing processes, and providing technical advice to senior leaders on systems, solutions, challenges, and strategy. The position supports end-to-end ownership of the design, implementation, and operational excellence of software components, while proactively improving existing structures and processes. The Staff Software Engineer will contribute to the technical engineering roadmap by completing thorough assessments of implementation alternatives and their trade-offs, and providing recommendations. This role provides technical leadership for a small team with minimal guidance. Key responsibilities include leading end-to-end release management processes for the platform, ensuring high availability for services, and designing, estimating, and implementing new and refactored software services securely, reliably, and at scale. The engineer will own the quality of design and implementation of software components, deliver high-quality code on time, and follow the SDLC process. Ownership of service performance and availability is crucial, including participation in on-call rotations and providing support during incidents. Full-time telecommuting is permitted from anywhere within the U.S.

Requirements

  • Bachelor’s degree, or foreign equivalent, in Computer Science, Information Systems, or a closely related engineering field, plus 8 years of experience in the job offered or a related occupation.
  • Experience designing and developing large-scale software applications using Object-Oriented Design (8 years)
  • Experience with Python and Django Framework (8 years)
  • Experience with distributed systems, cloud-native applications, and containerization technologies such as Kubernetes (6 years)
  • Experience with large-scale data processing, caching strategies, and performance optimization (6 years)
  • Designing, building, and maintaining complex RESTful APIs and microservices at scale (8 years)
  • Experience with building services on cloud platforms (AWS or GCP) (8 years)
  • DynamoDB, Cassandra, DocumentDB, MySQL and other related database technology (6 years)
  • Expertise with continuous delivery and deployment practices using Github actions (5 years)
  • Hands-on experience building event-driven and asynchronous systems using Amazon SNS and Amazon SQS (4 years)
  • Expertise in managing infrastructure as code using Terraform and AWS CDK (5 years)
