About The Position

Coinbase is hiring Staff Software Engineers for several teams within its Developer Infrastructure group in Platform. The group builds and operates the tools and systems Coinbase engineers rely on to build and ship software, including scalable CI and build infrastructure and deployment orchestration. The role sets technical direction for complex, cross-cutting problems and leads delivery from ambiguous problem statements through production operation. The position owns core developer infrastructure platforms across their full lifecycle and drives improvements to build and CI time, deployment speed and safety, and developer feedback latency. It leads strategic initiatives such as large-scale platform migrations, establishes reliability practices through SLOs, observability, and on-call ownership, and works with engineering customers, engineering managers, and leadership to shape technical strategy and drive adoption. The engineer also mentors colleagues through design review, pairing, and shared ownership. Coinbase is remote-first, but not remote-only. Employees are expected to meet quarterly for in-person working sessions called “surges.” Base salary varies by location; the stated annual base salary range is $218,025–$256,500 USD, excluding equity and bonus. Total compensation may also include equity, bonus eligibility, and medical, dental, vision, and 401(k) benefits.

  • Hands-on proficiency in Go or a comparable systems language.
  • Direct experience in CI/CD, build systems, or deployment tooling.
  • Experience designing and shipping high-impact backend or platform systems used by many engineers and services, from ambiguous problem statements through long-term production operation.
  • Demonstrated technical leadership on cross-team initiatives, including setting architectural direction, driving organization-wide alignment, and making decisions that hold up at scale while remaining close to the code.
  • Deep operational expertise with production systems that have a broad downtime impact, including reliability, observability, and fast recovery.
  • Ability to align stakeholders on ambiguous cross-functional problems and raise technical standards through mentorship, design review, and clear written and verbal communication.
  • Responsible use of generative AI, maintaining human oversight.

Responsibilities

  • Own core developer infrastructure platforms, including CI/build systems and deployment orchestration, from design through production operation.
  • Identify high-leverage problems, convert ambiguous challenges into concrete technical roadmaps, and align dependent teams.
  • Improve build and CI wall time, deployment speed and safety, and developer feedback latency.
  • Lead cross-cutting initiatives end to end, including large-scale platform migrations across many teams.
  • Own SLOs, observability, and on-call for developer infrastructure; design systems for reliability and fast recovery.
  • Partner with engineering customers, engineering managers, and leadership to shape technical strategy and drive organization-wide adoption.
  • Mentor engineers through design review, pairing, and shared ownership.
  • Use generative AI responsibly with human oversight to produce business-ready outputs and improve workflow efficiency, cost, and quality.
