Staff Software Engineer - Infrastructure

Watney•San Francisco, CA

About The Position

Watney builds and deploys autonomous robotic systems to increase the speed and capacity of critical infrastructure buildout, starting with data centers. Infrastructure engineers keep the robot fleet connected and safe to change while robots work at customer sites and stream real-time video and data to the machine learning team and other engineers. The Staff Software Engineer will partner with engineers currently operating this infrastructure, take full-time ownership of it, and define what constitutes a safe release. The role leads infrastructure changes across teams and is responsible for ensuring software changes can reach robots safely over customer networks and that video and data continue flowing when networks fail.

Requirements

  • Have led an infrastructure change across several teams, or founded the team that owns one.
  • Have owned production networking or edge traffic for a large system.
  • Have migrated a large system in stages through breaking changes without breaking its users.
  • Have owned observability and alerting for a production system.
  • Have built tooling that other engineers rely on every day.

Responsibilities

  • Own networking, remote access, and real-time video pipelines for the fleet.
  • Own CI, observability, and alerting for the fleet and the services behind it.
  • Build the release gate and rollout process for the fleet, and define the standards changes must meet.
  • Decide where data lives, how it is retained, and what the infrastructure costs to run.
  • Lead infrastructure changes with the software engineers who currently run the infrastructure and across the machine learning and fleet operations teams that depend on it.
