Staff Software Engineer, Google Workspace Data Export Platform

Google•Sunnyvale, CA
•$207,000 - $300,000

About The Position

Google software engineers develop technologies used by billions of people and work on products that process information at massive scale. This role focuses primarily on back-end infrastructure using Google’s standard Java web stack. The engineer will be responsible for the next-generation data export platform for domain-wide Takeout and Google Vault, supporting systems that process and export data at petabyte scale. The role leads designs across sub-teams, standardizes architectural patterns, and ensures consistency across organizational boundaries. It partners with Engineering Managers, Product Managers, and Tech Leads across Workspace Engineering teams, including Google Drive, Chat, and Gmail, to set technical direction, resolve architectural problems, and support predictable, high-quality execution. The engineer owns architecture across multiple services while contributing code to high-risk proof-of-concepts, shared foundational libraries, and critical-path components.

Requirements

  • Bachelor's degree or equivalent practical experience.
  • 8 years of experience programming in Java.
  • 5 years of experience testing and launching software products.
  • 5 years of experience building and developing large-scale infrastructure, distributed systems or networks, or experience with compute technologies, storage, or hardware architecture.
  • 3 years of experience with software design and architecture.

Nice To Haves

  • Master’s degree or PhD in Engineering, Computer Science, or a related technical field.
  • 8 years of experience with system architecture and leading cross-functional engineering projects.
  • 3 years of experience in a technical leadership role leading project teams and setting technical direction.
  • 3 years of experience working in a complex, matrixed organization involving cross-functional or cross-business projects.
  • Experience building or scaling distributed systems handling massive datasets (petabyte-scale).

Responsibilities

  • Own the overarching architecture, interfaces, and data models across multiple services.
  • Define the technical roadmap and identify scalability bottlenecks, architectural risks, and structural technical debt before they affect velocity or reliability.
  • Provide technical direction and guidance to project or stream tech leads, ensuring local technical decisions align with organization-wide goals.
  • Identify cross-team architectural and technical dependencies, resolve conflicting technical priorities, and eliminate single points of failure.
  • Write code for high-risk proof-of-concepts, shared foundational libraries, or critical-path components while delegating day-to-day feature implementation to development teams.
  • Lead designs across sub-teams, standardize architectural patterns, and ensure consistency across boundaries.
  • Partner with Engineering Managers, Product Managers, and Tech Leads from Workspace Engineering teams to set technical direction, resolve architectural problems, and support predictable, high-quality execution.
