Staff Software Engineer, Enterprise
About The Position
Toast is seeking a Staff Software Engineer to lead its Enterprise Sports & Entertainment team. The role works across Toast’s platform—including POS, backend, and front-end systems—to deliver features for Sports & Entertainment and hospitality customers and contribute to Toast’s success. The engineer designs, builds, deploys, and maintains resilient, scalable features; leads complex projects; collaborates with teams across Toast; and helps ensure quality, reliability, and successful customer rollouts. The position also involves partnering with Product, Design, and customer-facing functions, mentoring engineers, and using AI tools to improve development workflows and productivity.
Requirements
- At least 8 years of experience building backend services and APIs.
- Extensive experience with an object-oriented language such as Java or Kotlin, and a deep understanding of testing, quality, and best practices.
- Experience shipping production services and balancing delivery with platform stability and reliability.
- Experience building backend services and APIs and scaling distributed systems.
- Focus on delivering positive impact for Toast customers.
- Enjoy working in a team environment with a shared codebase.
- Excellent cross-team communication skills on complex technical topics.
Nice To Haves
- Experience building Android applications with Kotlin.
- Experience building front-end applications.
Responsibilities
- Design, build, deploy, and maintain highly resilient and scalable features across Toast’s Sports & Entertainment product offerings.
- Lead complex projects that improve functionality and reliability for customers.
- Partner with a wide array of teams across Toast.
- Ensure quality by building automated testing for changes.
- Roll features out to customers, including monitoring for success.
- Partner closely with Design and Product on the definition and design of features.
- Partner with Customer Success, Solutions, Sales, Care, and Onboarding to ensure technical deliverables align with enterprise customer expectations and long-term strategy.
- Mentor and coach other engineers.
- Use AI tools to enhance development workflows, improve velocity, and pioneer new approaches to building.
