Staff Software Engineer, Components & Device Actions

SmartThings•Minneapolis, MN
•$139,000 - $198,000•Hybrid

About The Position

We’re SmartThings, one of the leading IoT ecosystems in the world, creating the most effortless way for anyone to create a smart home. We're a wholly owned subsidiary of Samsung with corporate offices in Minneapolis and the Bay Area. More than 430 million people worldwide use SmartThings to control and manage their connected life. SmartThings delivers simple, powerful experiences across Samsung’s leading portfolio of phones, TVs, and appliances. We also offer the most versatile smart home experience as an open platform with a rich partner ecosystem (think IKEA, SONOS, Honeywell, and so many more). As a founding member of Matter, we are a leader in the industry to help make smart homes more secure, reliable and seamless to use. Come be a part of the leading edge of IoT innovation! SmartThings is seeking a Staff Software Engineer to join the Components and Device Actions (CODA) team. CODA owns the core device and location cloud services that the rest of the SmartThings platform builds on: how devices are described, organized, and managed, and how homes and their contents are represented and handed between owners. You'll join a tight-knit team of experienced engineers running mission-critical services at scale, with a roadmap that spans new platform capabilities, modernization of our stack, and growing demand from enterprise customers. It's a role with real influence over where these services go next. This role is hybrid, 3 days/week in our Minneapolis Office (on iconic St Anthony Main across from Downtown...with paid attached parking!). The pay range for this role is $139,000 to $198,000, with an annual bonus target of 20%.

Requirements

  • Bachelor's degree in Computer Science, Computer Engineering, or a related field
  • 8+ years of production software engineering with a record of Staff-level leadership
  • Fluency in JVM languages (Java, Kotlin, etc.) and frameworks (Spring Boot, Micronaut, etc).
  • A hands-on record designing and operating distributed microservices and RESTful APIs on AWS at scale, with Terraform and Docker in your toolkit
  • Sound judgment across data and messaging layers: DynamoDB versus relational stores, and event-driven systems built on Kafka or similar
  • Working knowledge of AI development tools and practices
  • Proven ability to lead design reviews, steer direction across teams, and turn complex problems into simple solutions, with clear written and verbal communication for technical and non-technical audiences

Nice To Haves

  • Zero-downtime migrations and large-scale data backfills on live systems
  • Observability, failure testing, and disciplined release practices
  • Kubernetes and container orchestration in production
  • Agentic coding tools, and a habit of sharing what works
  • Multi-tenant platforms with permissions, usage limits, and rate limiting

Responsibilities

  • Chart the long-term direction for one or more CODA domains so our device and location services keep pace with platform growth.
  • Own large, ambiguous, multi-team efforts from first sketch to well-run production launch.
  • Steer design for the services behind device capabilities, device groups, locations, and ownership transfer, including event-driven state processing and the demands of enterprise customers. Reliability, performance, and security shape the design from day one.
  • Lead the evolution of our stack while balancing security, maintainability, and cost.
  • Shape how the team adopts AI-assisted development and operational tooling, deciding where it genuinely improves speed and quality.
  • Work alongside global platform, product, and partner teams that build on CODA, keeping priorities aligned with product needs and business goals.
  • Coach engineers at every level and build habits that lift the bar across the organization.
  • SmartThings teams run what they build. You'll share responsibility for production support, from planning through deployment.
