About The Position

Garmin is seeking a full-time Staff Software Engineer - GNSS/INS for its Core Platform Technology team at its Boulder, Colorado site. The role develops GNSS- and INS-based positioning solutions and focuses on innovation and exploration. The engineer works closely with Garmin's product segments to explore, align, and advance positioning technology across product categories. The position contributes to technical research and development, designs and implements complex embedded software, and researches algorithmic problems and new technologies. It also supports cross-disciplinary solution architecture, represents Garmin with industry partners and regulatory groups, and provides technical guidance and mentoring to less experienced software engineers.

Requirements

  • Bachelor’s degree in Computer Science, Electrical Engineering, Computer Engineering, Aerospace Engineering, Math, Physics, or a related field and at least 14 years of relevant experience, or an equivalent combination of education and experience.
  • Experience with positioning algorithms for consumer applications and a strong understanding of GNSS measurements and error sources, estimation techniques including least squares and Kalman filtering, blunder/fault detection, multi-constellation and multi-frequency, AGNSS, inertial navigation systems, inertial sensors, sensor fusion, and other geomatic-related topics.
  • Proficiency in C/C++ software development and engineering for embedded, real-time environments.
  • Strong ability to use scripting languages such as Python or Matlab, or C++, to automate data analysis of large data sets to verify positioning algorithms.
  • Proven ability to research technical algorithmic problems and implement appropriate algorithmic solutions.
  • Demonstrated success managing exceedingly complex problems and providing highly innovative and ingenious solutions.
  • Experience architecting solutions for multiple groups and/or disciplines.
  • Ability to be positive, detail-oriented, organized, team-oriented, and a driven problem solver, multitasker, and self-starter who can prioritize and lead in a fast-paced, deadline-driven environment.

Nice To Haves

  • Expertise in inertial navigation techniques, such as vehicle and pedestrian dead reckoning and GNSS-aided INS.
  • PVT (Position, Velocity, Timing) experience in the consumer or embedded space.
  • Knowledge of carrier phase measurement processing methods.
  • Knowledge of GNSS measurement generation, tracking loops, and how measurements are affected by the environment.
  • Experience with MEMS sensor technology, including error-source modeling and quantification of accelerometers and gyroscopes.
  • Experience detecting GNSS denial-of-service, jamming, or spoofing events.
  • Experience in Java.

Responsibilities

  • Contribute to advanced technical research and development in positioning technologies.
  • Design, implement, test, and document complex software applications using C/C++ for embedded systems.
  • Participate in peer reviews of software designs, algorithm designs, and software implementations.
  • Collaborate with colleagues on software and algorithm design approaches and implementations.
  • Provide reliable solutions to positioning problems using sound problem-solving techniques.
  • Conduct technical research and feasibility studies on new technologies and provide insight and recommendations to engineering management.
  • Represent Garmin among industry partners, peer groups, and regulating agencies.
  • Contribute inventions, new designs, and techniques regarded as significant advances to products or the application development process.
  • Apply advanced theories, principles, and concepts to develop new principles and theories.
  • Use knowledge of principles to forecast new technology and provide business directions based on those forecasts.
  • Guide and mentor less experienced software engineers in areas such as software methodology, cost analysis, and project management.

Benefits

  • Eligible for Garmin's benefit program.
