Staff Software Engineer, Product

Tono Health•Brooklyn, NY
•$180,000 - $275,000•Hybrid

About The Position

Tono is building software and operations to make specialty care faster to access and easier to deliver, starting with dermatology. The company operates a national telehealth practice and an in-person clinic in DUMBO, Brooklyn, and is developing an autonomous EHR for specialty clinics. The Staff Software Engineer, Product will work closely with the co-founders, engineers, and physicians to build and operate the company's software, including its EHR and patient portal. The role owns product features end to end across a modern TypeScript monorepo, spanning database schema design, Prisma migrations, tRPC API endpoints, and React components. It also invests in platform capabilities that help the team build faster, including agent infrastructure, telemetry abstractions, and real-time durability primitives. Work may include AI-powered clinical tools, billing flows, model post-training, and analysis of patient intake data. The engineer will help make AI features reliable in production through structured outputs, evaluations, monitoring, human review, and safe fallbacks. The team ships iteratively with clear ownership, small pull requests, careful reviews, feature flags, safe migrations, and a focus on maintainability and observability. Engineers work across frontend, backend, data, and infrastructure. The position is hybrid, with a few days per week in the DUMBO, Brooklyn office; fully remote candidates may be considered.

  • Strong TypeScript skills across frontend and backend.
  • Expertise in relational database fundamentals, including schema design, migrations, and query performance.
  • Comfort shipping iteratively with feature flags, instrumentation, and tight feedback loops.
  • Care for code quality and pride in engineering craft.
  • Ability to drive outcomes by breaking ambiguous problems into workstreams and managing and executing them.
  • Experience working on agent systems, including designing evaluations, data-labeling techniques, or self-improving agent loops.
