About The Position

Decagon is hiring a Staff Software Engineer for its Product Engineering team, which builds the platform customers use to create, operate, and improve conversational AI agents. The role involves designing and building systems that let customers configure, train, test, and monitor sophisticated agents, with strong engineering foundations and reusable abstractions that support different use cases without customer-specific forks. The engineer will work closely with product and design from discovery and requirements definition through design reviews, launch, and iteration. The role owns features end to end, from technical architecture through deployment, and stays close to customers to understand their use cases. The systems built support agents deployed across channels such as chat, voice, email, and SMS, including critical workflows for Fortune 100 companies.

Requirements

  • At least 7 years of experience building software products, with strong product thinking.
  • Proficiency in Python and comfort working across the entire stack.
  • Experience translating complex technical capabilities into simple, usable interfaces.
  • Strong instincts for complex systems, including asynchronous programming and failure modes that emerge at scale.
  • Comfort debugging system failures in deep technology stacks using appropriate tools.
  • Ability to turn customer requests into clear, well-scoped product and technical specifications.
  • Good judgment about when to ship quickly and when to slow down and build correctly.

Nice To Haves

  • Background with LLMs, prompt engineering, evaluations, or AI agent systems.
  • Experience building developer tools, APIs, platforms, or internal tools that became customer-facing.
  • Experience with observability, data visualization, or analytics products.
  • Experience building security-sensitive product systems, such as authentication and data access controls.
  • Experience working with multimodal or voice models.

Responsibilities

  • Build self-serve functionality for agent configuration, training, and deployment to eliminate manual work.
  • Design configuration abstractions that balance power and simplicity across diverse enterprise use cases while remaining usable by non-technical teams.
  • Build AI-powered tools that enable CX and operations teams to create and manage complex agent workflows without writing code.
  • Build monitoring, tracing, and analytics that provide actionable information about where and why agents fail.
  • Handle agentic systems at scale, including critical flows for Fortune 100 companies.
  • Evaluate new text and voice models and integrate successful models into production traffic.
  • Own features end to end, from technical architecture through deployment and subsequent iteration.
  • Collaborate with product and design on discovery, requirements, design reviews, and launches, while staying close to customers.

Benefits

  • Medical, dental, and vision benefits for employees and their families.
  • Life insurance and disability benefits.
  • Retirement plan, such as a 401(k) or pension.
  • Parental leave.
  • Fertility and family-building benefits through Carrot.
  • Monthly stipend supporting wellness, lifestyle, and work-life balance.
  • Daily office lunches and snacks.
  • Take-what-you-need vacation policy, subject to local requirements; UK employees receive 25 days of statutory leave.
  • Competitive equity.
