About The Position

LineVision is seeking a Staff Software Engineer for its LineRate team to set the architecture and technical strategy for systems that transform large-scale time-series sensor data into ratings used by utility customers. The role spans the ratings generation library and its microservice, a customer-deployable product, weather modeling tools, and front-end visualizations. The Staff Software Engineer will establish technical direction across these systems, lead cross-team initiatives, influence roadmap decisions, and raise the technical capabilities of the team. The position is based at LineVision’s Boston, Massachusetts headquarters and is described as full-time, in person, with a hybrid schedule of 2–4 days per week. Participation in a compensated rotational on-call schedule is required as a condition of employment. In the first three months, the engineer is expected to learn how the core systems connect, make a meaningful contribution, build relationships with partner teams, and deliver a written assessment of architecture risks and opportunities. Within six months, they are expected to lead a multi-codebase or multi-team initiative, propose an improvement to time-series data storage or retrieval, and influence roadmap discussions. Within the first year, they should become a technical authority for at least one core codebase, lead a cross-functional initiative through delivery, coach engineers, and establish a team-wide practice or program. The role reports to the Senior Software Engineering Manager and works closely with Data Science, UI/UX, Product, and engineering peers. Compensation is a base salary of $160,000–$180,000, plus a 10% bonus and equity.

Requirements

  • Expert proficiency in Python and JavaScript/TypeScript, with strong experience in React.
  • Proven experience designing and evolving systems using at least one relational database and one NoSQL database.
  • Experience deploying and operating production systems on a major cloud platform.
  • Track record of setting architecture across the stack, from data storage through APIs to the user interface.
  • Experience leading technical initiatives across multiple engineers or teams.
  • Experience mentoring other engineers.

Nice To Haves

  • Experience with Kubernetes.
  • Experience with Rust.
  • Experience designing large-scale time-series data systems.
  • Experience working closely with data science or applied science teams to productionize research code.
  • Experience building engineering practices or programs that scaled beyond one’s own team.

Responsibilities

  • Develop and maintain technical architecture for the ratings generation library and microservice, customer-deployable product, weather modeling tools, and front-end visualizations.
  • Partner with Data Science to move research code into reliable, scalable production services and develop reusable frameworks to accelerate that process.
  • Work with UI/UX and Product to design APIs and data contracts.
  • Design storage and retrieval strategies for large time-series data sets, balancing cost, latency, and accuracy.
  • Lead complex, multi-team technical initiatives from scoping through delivery and guide teams through execution.
  • Influence roadmap priorities with Product and Engineering leadership, weighing customer benefit, implementation time, and long-term technical cost.
  • Coach engineers through design reviews, code reviews, and pairing, and build programs that develop the team’s technical capabilities.
  • Participate in a compensated rotational on-call schedule.
  • Within the first three months, learn how the core systems connect, contribute to at least one, build working relationships with partner teams, and deliver a written architecture assessment.
  • Within the first six months, lead an initiative spanning multiple codebases or teams, propose and drive a time-series storage or retrieval improvement, and contribute a technical perspective to roadmap decisions.
