Staff Software Engineer

JLL•Chicago, IL
•$180,000 - $190,000•Onsite

About The Position

As a Staff Software Engineer on JLL’s MarTech Engineering Team, you will be a forward-deployed engineer embedded in the marketing organization, building production AI agents to address real campaign, content, social, account-based marketing (ABM), and performance problems. You will work closely with marketing subject-matter experts, learn their workflows and systems, and turn their expertise into agents that are deployed and maintained in production. The role covers the full agent lifecycle: prototyping ideas with SMEs, building integrations and skills for working pilots, and hardening pilots into reliable production systems. You will resolve gaps pragmatically when possible and translate other gaps into prioritized requirements for the partner platform team. The role sits between marketing domain expertise and platform infrastructure, ensuring that both can progress without unnecessary delays. You will exercise technical judgment in deciding what to build, what to wait for, and what to make reusable. You will help ensure agent outputs are safe, brand-aligned, and factually grounded across a complex marketing technology stack. Success is measured by the amount and quality of marketing work agents perform in production and the trust marketers place in them. The position does not provide visa sponsorship; candidates must be authorized to work in the United States without sponsorship. The position is on-site in Chicago, Illinois, or San Francisco, California. Expected compensation is $180,000–$190,000 per year; final compensation depends on candidate qualifications, location, market conditions, and internal considerations. Applications are accepted on an ongoing basis until a candidate is identified.

Requirements

  • Bachelor’s or Master’s degree in Computer Science, Engineering, or a related field, or equivalent work experience.
  • English proficiency, written and verbal, sufficient for success in a remote and largely asynchronous work environment.
  • At least 5 years of software engineering experience working with production systems, including significant experience integrating enterprise APIs such as CRMs, CMSes, DAMs, advertising platforms, marketing automation tools, and analytics systems.
  • Hands-on experience with modern LLM APIs across providers, including prompt engineering, tool use or function calling, structured outputs, and context engineering.
  • Experience designing agent systems involving multi-step reasoning, tool orchestration, memory, error recovery, and human-in-the-loop escalation paths.
  • Firsthand experience with agent engineering challenges, including hallucination grounding, tool reliability and silent failures, realistic evaluation, cost and latency tradeoffs, prompt drift, and production durability.
  • Experience building RAG systems, including embeddings, vector stores, retrieval optimization, and grounding, with sound judgment about when retrieval is preferable to tools, fine-tuning, or schema changes.
  • Experience deploying LLM-powered services or agents to production cloud environments and operating them, including authentication, networking, secrets, observability, rollback, and cost monitoring.
  • Ability and enthusiasm to embed with non-technical domain experts, translate ambiguous problems into shippable scope, and learn an unfamiliar domain deeply enough to anticipate agent failure modes.
  • Pragmatic shipping judgment, including knowing when a brittle workaround can unblock a pilot and when a solution should be built properly from the outset.
  • Ability to communicate across technical levels with marketing SMEs, leadership, and platform engineers, including explaining failure modes and architectural or protocol details clearly.
  • Strong analytical and interpersonal skills and a proven ability to thrive and collaborate in dynamic, product-focused, distributed teams.
  • Proactive problem-solving approach and willingness to acquire skills and knowledge as needed.
  • Confidence taking ownership of projects from start to finish and turning unclear ideas into reality.
  • Commitment to making coworkers feel included in every interaction.
  • Authorization to work in the United States without visa sponsorship.

Responsibilities

  • Embed with marketing SMEs across campaigns, property marketing, content production, social, ABM, and performance intelligence to design and ship agents used in their daily work.
  • Build, deploy, and operate production marketing AI agents that reason over regional context, brand guidelines, and intent data, and use tools to draft content, configure campaigns, monitor performance, and recommend optimizations.
  • Design and grow a Marketing Domain Skills Library of reusable, composable LLM workflows derived from live agent work.
  • Build integrations with CMS, DAM, CRM, marketing automation, advertising, and analytics systems, directly or through Marketing MCP servers when available.
  • Translate integration and capability gaps discovered during pilots into clear, prioritized requirements for the platform team.
  • Own production reliability, observability, evaluation, and cost efficiency for LLM-powered workflows, including brand-voice checks, factual grounding, regression suites, and offline benchmarks in CI/CD.
  • Design multi-agent orchestration patterns, including coordination among Campaigns, Social, ABM, Content, Property, and Performance Intelligence agents, boundaries, escalations, and handoffs.
  • Define the agent pod’s playbook for progressing from SME conversations to pilots and deployed production agents, and raise the team’s technical quality.
  • Represent MarTech Engineering to JLL leadership, customers, and the wider engineering community.
  • Publish learnings through internal write-ups, engineering blog posts, and conference talks.
  • Stay current with agent engineering and bring useful ideas back to the team to improve quality, performance, and architecture at scale.
  • Drive innovation by experimenting and addressing complex, large-scale problems.
