About The Position

Baton Corp is looking for a Staff Software Engineer – Payments to design and build core payment services powering high-scale products in the crypto ecosystem. This is a high-ownership engineering role where you'll solve complex, correctness-critical problems across payment flows, settlement, reconciliation, and financial infrastructure.

Requirements

Excellent backend / systems engineer with experience in Rust, Go, C++, Java/Scala, or similar.
Experience building high-performance, mission-critical systems.
Proficiency in distributed systems concepts: Consistency models, fault tolerance, idempotency and exactly-once semantics, async and event-driven patterns, sagas.
Experience in domains where correctness is critical, such as payments, fintech, high-throughput transaction processing, ledgers, or financial infrastructure.
Strong database fundamentals (transactions, indexing, query and caching strategy, event streaming).
Understanding of security best practices: Key management, secrets hygiene, least privilege, and audit trails.
Ownership mentality: Bias toward action, comfortable in ambiguity, and ability to finish tasks, including reliability and operability work.

Nice To Haves

Deep Rust experience or open-source contributions.
Experience with performance work (profiling, reducing allocations, lock-free structures).
Payments domain depth (card networks, bank rails, chargebacks, open banking).
Experience with risk / fraud systems (rule engines, feature stores, device fingerprinting).
Experience with compliance infrastructure (sanctions screening, KYC/AML workflows, audit trails).
Crypto / on-chain experience (wallet infrastructure, stablecoin flows, on-chain programs).
Accounting fundamentals (double-entry ledgers, reconciliation, regulatory reporting).
Platform / cloud / observability background.

Responsibilities

Design and build reliable, scalable payment and financial infrastructure.
Own systems end-to-end, from architecture and implementation to production and on-call.
Solve complex problems involving payment processing, settlement, reconciliation and auditability.
Build distributed systems with strong guarantees around idempotency, consistency and correctness.
Work closely with experienced engineers in a fast-moving, low-bureaucracy environment.
Drive technical decisions and contribute to building systems from 0 → 1.
