About The Position

Samsara is seeking a Staff Software Engineer to join the Maps team. This role will focus on building and maintaining the shared geospatial platform that is critical to nearly all Samsara products. The team sources, ingests, enriches, and serves map data, including road networks, points of interest, addresses, and boundaries. The goal is to provide accurate, reliable, and easy-to-use data and APIs to product teams, enabling them to build location-aware experiences more efficiently. The Staff Software Engineer will help set the technical direction for this platform, working across the geospatial stack from data pipelines to API creation. This is a remote position open to candidates based in the US.

  • 8+ years building software, with at least 2 years in an architect or technical leadership role
  • Strong programming and design fundamentals
  • 4+ years working on large-scale distributed systems
  • 4+ years leading technical projects across multiple teams

Nice To Haves

  • Experience with GIS technologies and spatial analysis, including PostGIS, spatial SQL, GeoPandas/Shapely, QGIS, and geospatial data validation
  • Familiarity with geospatial data formats and open mapping ecosystems, including GeoParquet, OpenStreetMap (OSM), and OSM PBF; experience ingesting, transforming, validating, or serving these datasets

  • Partner with engineering leadership on the bets worth making, and be honest about tradeoffs
  • Represent Samsara externally when it makes sense — talks, open source, community engagement with the mapping/geospatial ecosystem
