About The Position

Engine is transforming business travel by creating a seamless platform that integrates corporate travel, a charge card, and modern spend management. The company is experiencing rapid growth and is backed by prominent investors. Engine has been recognized as a fast-growing travel and fintech platform. The Staff Software Engineer will be the senior technical leader for the Groups Shopping team, responsible for enhancing the hotel discovery and selection experience. This role focuses on improving property ranking, scaling systems for increased volume, and integrating AI into the product to assist users. The Groups Shopping team is tasked with making hotel discovery more intelligent by optimizing how properties are scored, sorted, and presented using various data signals and LLM reasoning. They are also responsible for building scalable systems that can handle significant increases in volume and operational efficiency. A key aspect of the role involves integrating AI directly into the user experience to help organizers search, compare, and make decisions within the booking flow.

Requirements

TypeScript and Node.js experience in a production at-scale environment.
Demonstrated daily practice of using AI coding tools (e.g., Claude Code, Cursor) with a clear point of view on their application.
Deep understanding of AWS and CI/CD, including debugging production services, IaC, and optimizing CI pipelines.
Excellent cross-functional and multi-level communication skills, capable of writing technical documentation, leading design discussions, and explaining technical trade-offs to various stakeholders.
Proven experience in leading and directing a team as the most senior engineer, focusing on direction, sequencing, and quality.

Nice To Haves

Deep expertise in TypeScript/Node.js internals, performance, and type-system fluency.
Product experience, with the ability to think from a customer's perspective.
Background in travel, hospitality, or marketplace industries.
Familiarity with React Native.

Responsibilities

Serve as the senior technical leader for the Groups Shopping team, owning the architecture for hotel discovery, scoring, and selection surfaces.
Define and maintain the technical bar for quality on the team, including code reviews, design reviews, and architectural decisions.
Drive the integration of AI into the product workflow, including defining AI surfaces, prompt design, and scoping LLM responsibilities.
Own non-trivial infrastructure decisions related to AWS services, data pipelines, and CI/CD processes, aiming to improve deployment and CI efficiency.
Provide mentorship and unblock other engineers through pairing, design reviews, documentation, and acting as a point of contact for cross-team collaboration.
